Megan Or Cattman EXHAUST? That is the question

So im in the market to purchase a new exhaust.

I want a nice growling/ deep sound but nothing to loud and annoying. Plus i want something that wont annoy me in the car while driving "DRONE"

I know i will hear some cabin noise but a little wont bother me.

What will be the difference between a 2.5 and 3.5 exhaust as far as noise goes?

I would like for it to sound aggressive when I step on the gas but dont want to sound like a fart can.

I want some horsepower gain as well but not looking for something to crazy. Im just looking to invest in bolt-on right now.

Please dont post saying "SEARCH" !!!! Im trying to find out everyone's opinion and experience without having to search thousands of threads.

Thanks in advance,
luis

You won't gain any HP with just a catback and no other exhaust mods. You'll gain some cool factor that's for sure.

Do you have a 6mt or 4AT? 3.5 or 3.0?

I'll speak from experience, I have the megan catback and a 3.5 6mt. Drone is bad from 2,200rpm to 2,500rpm, so if you have an MT tranny, it's manageable, but I can't imagine that on a 4AT... Other than that, I love it. It sounds great IMO. Definately not ricey.

ORLY?!?!?!?!?!?

Our cat-backs are terrible, any aftermarket 2.5-3" will free up a decent amount of power.

Supporting mods will increase the gain, but there's a very decent gain available with a simple catback.

HUH? Post One. Just one. Two if you're serious.

Cattman's exhaust is the most well rounded best built for htis car, period.

To the O.P.:

If you want the noise level reasonable but good gains get a cattman.

If you want power get a 3" but be ready for more noise. Cattman is the best for noise in this department

The only other option is custom. Something like a BRM or SRS with a quieter muffler custom installed like the G35 Sedan's or something like that.

Megan's are more on the ricey side IMHO. Cattman's sound great and are a very close second place to GReddy SP/SE series. They actually sound the same except Cattman exibits a tiny bit of rasp whereas the GReddy doesnt.

I'd like to see one bad review of Cattman please, sir. Been only a couple times there were minor manufacturer issues and were resolved- going to happen time to time.

And on an auto, the 3" Cattman is great, even with Cattman headers and y. There is a drone zone between about 2300-2700 but is not horrible or annoying. I've done two videos. Both on interstate and going from 60 mph and within the drone zone (if you want to call it that) then full throttle pull to 80 mph and brief travel.

First up is Cattman headers, y, and fastcat. Headers and front portion of y wrapped. Stock catback.
http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...r/d3e2e32f.mp4

Second video is addition of 3" Cattman catback. Same pull. Once I get to 80mph, exhaust noise practically disappears.

Get a 3" Cattman exhaust. I have it and actually think its pretty quiet for a 3" exhaust. I have a 3.5 6MT with cattman headers and y-pipe too and an intake and its tuned. And I have NEVER EVER seen anyone say anything bad about The Cattman exhaust....matter of fact the shop that installed my exahust on my Maxima said that it sounds better than ANY 350z catback exhaust they EVER installed. The shop that tuned my car asked me where they could buy some because they loved the way it sounded on the dyno.....I get compliments ALL the time on my Cattman exhaust. There is NO comparison at all the the 3" cattman exhaust PERIOD!! MEGAN dont come close (I have heard some and they sound like fart cans if you ask me...the 2.5") and GREDDY dont come close (LOUD).......BUT you will PAY for Cattman exhaust though......top quality = top $$$.

Heard a local 350z with aftermarket exhaust. I just laughed. I'd also guess he paid more than I did and my Cattman sounds better!

yeh...I never heard any 350z exhaust that sounds anything like Cattman.....the 3" 350z exhaust are just LOUD!!! even at idle.....good grief. But at idle you can barely even hear my car. Its that quiet.....a little drone at around 2300-2800ish.....at about 5000rpms and up...its just like SEX!!!! Sounds so freakin smooth. If you want to hear what my exhaust sounds like just click my youtube link in my name and check out the videos of my car.....

Im very obsessive when it comes to exhausts. Purely antirasp. Ive tried all different kind of setups. And after having first hand experience with a cattman, and greddy sp1-2, the greddy sounds cleaner of the two. And cheaper too. Their sound notes are similar to the tee except for that slight hint of rasp cattman has around 2k+.

OP, no to Megan.

Dont recall ever posted a video before today. See if this works. Same order: stock catback.

http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...r/d3e2e32f.mp4

Full Cattman setup: 3" exhaust.
http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/...r/079d77da.mp4

Above post also corrected.

Its backwards. The one on the bottom is stock and the cattman on top.

Videos are subjective. But if the road noise can be heard over the exhaust, it is quite. Naturally louder than stock, but I still listen to my stereo with the kids at the same low volume as before. So the exhaust noise has not increased to any point where it is disruptive to conversations or radio listening.

No sir, videos are marked accurately. Actually recorded the night video today after
Work. No confusion. Day is stock catback and night is full Cattman. Why the confusion?

Think I might be thrown by the intake noise. Either that or the day was taken with the window open and the night closed. Correct me if im wrong

For what it is worth, I have sound deadened back deck due to the aftermarket sub mounted in place of the Bose. I've also got a peice of insulation matt layed across the trunk beneath the carpet. Cut a few decibels? Maybe. significant difference? I think not. Running with windows down makes little difference in volume.

Nope. Both videos with windows up. Yeah, intake noise is heavy. But hopefully allows some reference
Still about how little noise from the exhaust intrudes into the cabin.

I disagree. Having the windows up, you can hear and feel the reverberations more while with them open, the sound waves escape. And its more audible of course.

Not to be annoying or whatever but this question has been lingering in my head for quite some time too. I have all supporting mods, port n polish, ssim, nwp spacers, nwp bop, obx headers y pipe etc etc. the megan sounds great but idk about the drone, the price is definitely right. 3" exhaust is great but cattman is damn near impossible to get without a ridiculously long wait. My only real concern is the total low end loss of power with bigger piping. idk what do you guys think?

If youre planning on staying N/A untuned, keep 2.5. If you plan to tune or boost, or both, then and only then do you do a 3" exhaust.

No boost, definitely thought long and hard about it but the headaches arent worth it, this will always and forever be my daily, gonna buy a stock turbo car and turn it into a weekend monster. i already have a wideband and vafc2 so i figure why not tune it now. BUT if i do 3" it wont stop there, im doing cams and bigger maf along with 3" cutout THEN a tune =D, sound good?

If youre going all out then, yeah go 3". A tune will kinda rectify what you will lose down low.

Biggest thing i would is the cams and bigger maf, dont want the car to guzzle anymore gas than it already does lol would a tune now help with the horrible low end i have now? sorry for the thread jack OP, but i figure its ok to ask the necassary questions here instead of a new thread.

YES! You need a tune with all those mods you listed! Youll gain power as well as a slight increase in MPG.
