Checking for TDC on a VQ35 with no crank pulley

I've been trying to set TDC on my '05 VQ35 motor, but am stumped at this point because it did not come with the stock crank pulley. I was figuring that the link on the crank chain with paint on it would line up with the paint mark on the crank sprocket (it does the same thing on the VQ30), but it's always a few links away from it. I can line up the cams on cylinder 1 per the FSM, but how do I know that it's at TDC? If the cams are positioned the way the FSM states (pointed slightly upwards towards each other), is it going to be at TDC? Any help would be appreciated.

I had the exact same problem. This is what you do. if you have any crank pulley, they should have the marks for the timing. Vq30 crank pulley will do. TDC means where the crank is, not the cams, you have to move the pulley until the links match up. it's trial and error thing, but it's easy to do. Make sure they all line up. I posted a thread a few weeks ago on the same thing, see if you can find it.
