2 10" JL Audio W3...JL Audio 500/1 Amp?

I just bought a box with 2 10" JL Audio W3 subs from a fellow Maxima.org member, but I didn't buy his amp.

I might be buying a JL Audio 500/1 amp from another Maxima.org member, but when I told him I'd use it to power my 10s...he told me:
"you'll have to run the amp with low power or you'll blow them 10s" and "like i said though you'll have to run this amp like half way if that...you'll fry em."

I don't think I'll have any problems, but he claims they're made for the 12" W3s...not the 10s. I thought they were made for the W3s.

Anyways, will I have any problems with the 10s and this amp? Or should I consider upgrading to 12s?

Thanks,
-Nick

You will have NO problems with that set up. I am running now 2 10W3D6's with a 250/1 and the gain is only cranked to about 10 o'clock.

P.S. It is easier to blow a sub if you underdrive it more than overdriving it.

How do you like the 2 10s? I was gonna get 2 12" W3s, but I think I'll be plenty satisfied with the 10s. My friend has 2 10s in his car and they sound great!

They pound for my kind of music, classic rock, classical, trance, etc. I dont normally listen to rap and r&b but with the right enclosure 10's will sound good! It all depends on how the box is built.

I actually have some pictures of the box that the seller sent me. I don't know if you'd care to see them??

Getting back to the topic of this thread, will I have to run that amp at lower power that it has? I guess I can play with it when I get it. My neighbor knows a lot about stereos...he could definately help me out.

Yet another person has told me, and I quote...

"BTW, a 500x1 JL amp is a bit much for only two W3's. the 250x1 would easily do the job "

Maximadave, in your opinion, would the two 10W3s run better with a 250/1 or a 500/1 amp? I thought the 500/1 was made for the W3s. Reguardless of their size, don't they still handle the same power?

I'm not sure if the subs are D2, D4, or D6. I guess I could ask the seller.

I'm thinking I should've just gone with a pair of 12" W3s and a 500/1 amp.

Let me know if you think the 500/1 or the 250/1 would be more sufficient. I'll e-mail the seller and se if he knows if the subs are D2, D4, or D6.

Thanks,
-Nick

Well, when I posted some of these replys last night, the board was acting up. So let me try this again to bump it back up so Maximadave can see the new stuff.

The subs are D4. Should I go with the 500/1 amp, or the 250/1. Obviously the 250/1 is gonna be cheaper than the 500/1 and I don't want to spend a lot of money, but will the 250/1 be enough to power 2 10" W3 D4s?

Thanks,
-Nick

If you see my sig you'll know exactly what I have now.

I went from one 10W3D6 to two 10W3D6's with the same JL250/1 amp and the amp is only cranked to about 10 o'clock.

The JL amps are stable from 1.3ohms to 8 ohms. So you can say that my amp is running at a 3 ohm load which is fine.

The JL 250/1 is perfect for 10W3's
If you want 12W3's go with the 500/1

I think I'll go for the 250/1. How much do you sell it for? You have the D6...mine are D4...I'll still be ok, right?

Also, do you have any recommendations on headunits for the Maxima? I was going to get the Kenwood DPX-4010, which is Double-DIN, but I don't know. I kinda want something with a detachable face for that added peace of mind.

Thanks,
-Nick

The Kenwood piece is a double din deck that is NOT detachable face...I would only get it if you have 50-50 tapes/cds

If you have the D4, yes it will work just as long as you have 2 of them.

Cd player only...of course I'm gonna recommend Eclipse for you

Ok, that is now at the top of my shopping list.

I have one more question for you Maximadave. I'm buying the Eclipse 82641 6.5" Speakers from you and I'm trying to pick an amp for them.

I was gonna get the US Acoustics USX-4065 Amp (65W x 4) for them, but I noticed you have the JL Audio 300/4. Which one would you recommend?

Also, how much do you sell the 300/4 for?

Thanks again!
