SQ? SQL? Need some help
Hey I'm trying to pick a sub out for my system but I'm confused. I was reading the Audio FAQ and got confused on the SQ and SQL. I'm looking at a R.F. Power 10" (T110D2) and don't know what kind of sub it is or what kind of enclosure I should do. Also if you have thoughts on a better sub I'd like to know. Looking for under $200 for the sub. Going to be running a 5 channel amp which will probably run 4ohm (200 watts to the sub). Thanks. Also wondering if I can run the amp at different ohms. I figure not but the speakers I think I'm going to get are 4ohm and the sub runs at 2ohm...?
:edit: also looking at type-s 10" sub.

The Power series T1 from RF is a basic entry level sub. It isn't a terrible place to start. I have yet to hear a Type-S sub as of yet.
If I had my choice I would choose an Ascendent Audio Assasin/Fi X which would sound better and be well under your $200 mark. And yes, I have used both.

hmm ok. Never heard of either. Will check now. My buddy has two type r's and they sound nice so I figured the S would be nice.
is the AA Arsenal series that much better then the Assassin series?

There's tons of option but you need to think about what wattage you will have available. If you plan to run at 2 ohms or 1 if your sub channel is capable then you can find a sub that is dual 2 ohm or 2 subs that are dual 4 ohm, or even single 2 ohm.
Once you know what your power options are, you can choose what sub to go with, an assassin would seem to fit your bill the best as it is dual 4 and can be ran at 2 ohms off your sub channel which should net you roughly 350-400 watts rms.

Ok I think I'll try the AA then. Most likely I'll be running 4 ohms because thats what the speakers run at. Unless the amp can run two different ohms for speakers and sub. They can't right? So that would mean 200w to the sub running on 4 ohms.

The amp can run different resistances if its a 5 channel, 90% of 5 channels can run 2 ohm on the sub channel, and you can run the aa at 2 ohm which would work out.

The Arsenal has the ability to get louder and handle more power. You don't have the power to push it though.

ok so the 5 channel amp can run my speakers at 4ohm and run the sub at 2ohm for more power. Sounds good. Still not sure on the sub tho. Think I may just try the AA Assassin since you both recommended it. How is the sound? Is it more for rap or what? I listen to mainly rock (some rap sometimes) so I want to make sure it will hit nicely and quick enough on the rock songs. Also what kind of box do I need? Enclosed? Ported? Not sure how they work.

also need help on amps. I was looking at the hifonics zeus8006. This would run my components at 55w at 4 ohms and run the sub at 300w on 2 ohm. Is that enough power? I've read hifonics makes decent amps for the price but don't want something to crap out. I'd like to keep that price low as well.
:edit: my mistake. The AA runs at 4 ohms I believe. So that would only be 200w to the sub at 4ohms. Too little power?

yeah. it only really needs 600 nominal to get full output. we hooked up my rlp to my friend's car for a few days. his amp puts out ~210 watts. it still sounded pretty good.
but yeah, 200 is a little on the low side for it though.

Well my buddy has two subs in his car and I don't think his amp is half the one i'm looking at so I think I'll just stick with it. I know the AA is 250w RMS but I can't afford to get an even bigger amp. Its about $100 for just 100w more to run the amp. Wondering if I should spend the extra $10 on the AA 12". Same RMS. Would the 10" be cleaner?
maybe I'll get the Kicker ZX700.5. Found one for $234. It's only 210w at 4ohms for the sub, but 70w for the speakers. Is that 10w really that much better for the sub? I mean $100 more then the hifonics...is it that much better?

question...if I get a 4 channel amp can I run the sub off that? 2 fronts off 1 channel and the sub off another channel? Would I bridge the sub connection? Or would I bridge it so that one channel goes to the speakers and the other to the sub?
#19
ok. I'm sticking with my plan then. 5 channel and run the sub at 200watts. If I can run the amp seperate ohms then at 250w or so. Trying to decide on Rainbow Germaniums and Apline X pro's now.
#26
ok cool so I can run at 2ohms. Good. Looks like the decisions are done. Germaniums upfront, Germanium mids in the rear, hifonics 5 channel, and AA Assasin 12". Now gotta research the box. I'm building an amp box to help cool the amp so I'll match it to the sub box. I assume I can get the enclosure details on the AA sight.

all solid choices also look into the TC sounds tc 9 if you can come across one, or the IDq. very solid on either, and offer great sq off either. moderately priced on either as well

There is suppose to be a program where you enter in the parameters of the Sub and it will come out with some specs... but I don't know how to use it, but I am sure someone here knows what I am talking about. I used the program like once or twice and couldn't figure it out so I called up AA and Chad (the owner) emailed me a decent port box drawing...

Oh is that right? When did that happen? Sorry I haven't paid much attention to Car Audio in a long time. Lately I have been having an itch for other apperance mods, but this is coming back to bite me in the but, I want to build a new box, with a Fi Q 15" and a new amp... but lol I just had to pay 1000 in taxes to the Federal gov....FTL

Sucks on the taxes. Let me know before you order your Q. I have heard a single ported 15" Q. Very nice. Tune to 32-33, 3-4cf after port and sub displacement, as large as you can go for daily tune. Put 1000-1200 watts to it. You should be very happy.

Funny you should mention the Q. Scott that owns Fi also now owns AA.
