Amp goes into protect mode, need advice
I had a PhoenixGold 300 watt amp and low rise 10" sub added to my stock system. The shop tuned it and it sounded good. On the 50 mile drive home I kept it cranked up and noticed that the bass had cut out and the amp was in protect mode. After it cooled down I turned it back on and after 15 mins it went into protect mode again.
I'm in Cali in the desert and it was only 80 degrees that day but in the summer it will get well into the 100's. I've already contacted the install shop and I'm going back this weekend. The installer said that I could either have some additional cooling installed or go to the next bigger amp and just tune it so it won't blow the sub.
I'm leaning towards getting the bigger amp which costs about $100 more and is 500 watts. What do you guys think, would that fix my problem or would I just be blowing money? As for the extra power, I do have an old bass box from my younger days with dual 12" speakers that I can use if I want the extra thump.

Sounds like the amp went into protect mode due to either the gain not being correctly set, or not enough space around it to allow it to cool. Having said that, I've driven from San Diego to San Francisco many times with a full trunk....luggage & other things against the amps. Never had my amps shut off.
Getting the amp with more power may be the way to go. That way the gains could be set correctly & you get the bass output that you want.

They determined that it was going into protect mode due to heat. The stereo shop was real cool about it and upgraded me to the next bigger amp, (Phoenix Gold SX400.1) and even upgraded me to a bigger, vented sub, all for $100.
I have the bass I want, the sound quality I want, and I can play my music at the basketball court for hours now thanks to my new Optima Red Top battery.
