6spd_Hayes - 2012 Autocross Season

Well, the first race is under my belt. I am very, very rusty.

Twickenham Auto Club/Tennessee Valley Region SCCA
Performance Driving School - March 16-18, 2012
Huntsville, Alabama

I helped with the instruction of the fwd students all weekend. We had 93 cars at the autocross on Sunday. You can check out the cars in my video after a couple of the runs. I was running 275 width Hankook C71 slicks on front, and for laughs, put on a set of 225 width bald Azenis on the rear (in an attempt to get the car to actually rotate). Boy did it EVER rotate!! I had a spin on run 2 and 4. Lesson learned, don't set the car up that way again.

Enjoy the video below! Comments welcome!

at the spins

I am just blown away by how wide open and fast that course is. Are they all like that? I don't think I've ever been on an auto-x course that fast. It looks like you pretty much topped out second gear a few times each run. It's funny, but I feel like I can almost see the torque from your 3.5 pulling you hard out of corners where my car would be struggling to pick up speed. Consider me jealous

Depends on the course designer. This one was designed to combine the elements of the Performance Driving School the day before (emergency lane change, how to handle a 180, skidpad, the 'peanut' (incresing radius turns, decreasing radius turns), low speed steering practice). It was also designed by one of the high horsepower fwd guys too. I was close to topping out 2nd a few places. The sticky Hankook's have some to do about me being able to pull out of the corners quickly.

We are fortunate in North Alabama to have this old airfield to use. The pavement is VERY old and extremely rough.

I <3 spins, yours aren't as dramatic as mine, gotta love that IRS eh?

Mine are like la-dee-da-deee-da...... SPIN OUT NOW.......

Yours are more like... la-dee-da... ruh roh.... oh noes.... Yup..... Spinning out now.....

Looks recoverable, of course this is sitting down @ my desk @ work, who knows what I'd do sitting in the hot seat.

Next event I'd like to see the last run(s) from the higher camera angle to get a better idea of what time you might be leaving out there. Runs 1&2 could benefit from better corner entries allowing you to get on the power a bit sooner (might've solved it on 3&4). As for the spins maybe try to keep part thottle open to hold the weight rearward. Have you tried some "sticky" 225's on the rear yet? Bald, hard, or 60psi rear tires offer rotation but it's not predictable and progressive.

I've got an offer from another autocross member to buy his Kuhmo slicks in 225 width to go on my lightweight 17's. If I can get them cheap/free, I might try it. My Azenis are ready for the garbage.

Next autocross is tomorrow with a 50% chance of rain. If the track is wet, I'll run my street tires (Bridgestone Potenza RE-760s, 245/40-18). If it is dry, I will run my 275 width Hankook slicks on all 4s. I'll also work on getting a higher vantage point on my runs tomorrow.

Second race of the year, still shaking off the cobwebs.

Twickenham Auto Club/Tennessee Valley Region SCCA
Autocross #1 - March 24, 2012
Huntsville, Alabama

61 entries this weekend. Great weather for autocrossing. I went with the 275 Hankooks on all 4 corners this week. Go Pro gave me fits for the first 2 runs, then I figured it out for the final 4 runs. On the last 2 runs, I remembered I had an app on my phone that gave me acceleration, braking, and lateral G's. I zip tied the phone the the center armrest console. Worked very good (although at the angle, my phone screen inverted itself). The accel = braking and braking=accel. I'll try to get it right for the next race. I posted the accel/braking chart as well as the friction circle in the video. Upon request, I also mounted the camera up higher. As a bonus, I did a sped up video of the storms coming in while waiting in the grid for my final run, just barely made it before the rain started.

I have no idea why I thought he had a 6th gen....

Still the difference in tire setups and minor A32 v A33 chassis differences.... Maybe I need to get some of mine spins from his angle, maybe they aren't as dramatic as I think they are.

Great runs! After watching run#3 I said that's a solid run, only one slight error worth .1s. That run might even stand for the day - then I saw run 6. I'm still not sure how you picked up another .6s. The hairpins looked identical. Strong mid-pack finish. As long as the slaloms stay that far apart you can repeat those all year long...

Here is my video from my 3rd autocross of the year (I think it is the third, I am starting to lose track). This was with the Tennessee Region SCCA at Twin Fountains Raceway in Shelbyville, Tennessee.

Twin Fountains is a kart track. It is a slightly banked oval with a good road course attached. This was probably the funnest autocrosses I have ever done. It was kinda like a mini-Nashville Super Speedway, albeit slower. Once I got into second gear, I left it there. We got a total of 8 runs in two sessions.

Comments welcome!

That is a mini road course and looks fun. Run #8 was great, nice pickup from run #6 which was excellent too. I see maybe a more few tenth's out there...
8:07 - take the right hander tighter and allow the car to drift out a bit more
8:29 - take the left hander tighter, unwind as you make a more carving S
8:38 - setup tighter to the left and try to carry a bit more speed into the finish (might not be possible as you're already carrying a bunch of speed there)

Autocross #5 of the year.

We ran it like a Nationals setup. We ran 3 runs in a counter-clockwise fashion in the morning, then ran 3 runs in the afternoon in a clockwise fashion. We took the lowest time in the morning and added it to the lowest time from the afternoon and that was your score. We made a change to the 180 in the afternoon for safety sake (we had to slow down the , so the afternoon times are quicker). There is a 30 foot hole (read chasm of death) on the backside of the taxi-way. If a car went in upside down, we'd need a crane to get it out.

My only other competition is a black SRT-4 Neon that is VERY quick in DSP. He has beaten me the last two autocrosses and he was on street tires to my slicks.

Here is a funny, you really have to remember to turn off your Go Pro camera when you are done with it. I forgot... check out the 6m29s mark.

Likewise, check out this section for what a Maxima F1 car would sound like. Towards the end, it sounds like an blown diffuser while idling thru the grid.... at the 7m35s mark.

Enjoy! Comments welcome

Here is my video from my 6th autocross of the year. This was my second Tennessee Region SCCA autocross at Twin Fountains Raceway in Shelbyville, Tennessee.

It's been so long since I've run it, I can't remember the highlights. I do remember I started using a combo of Dynolicious Log Box and Dashware to give the onscreen data relay. I couldn't get my g-meter to work correctly on this autocross, but in future ones I did.
