Should i change my tranny oil?

What's up guys, i ordered the amsoil from talkinghorse here from the org. I have 127,xxx miles. Every single person that i brag to that i just bought new oil for my tranny tells me not to put it in. Everyone keeps telling me don't do it, leave what's in there. I'm thinking to myself wtf..???127,xxx maybe it's actually time to change the oil? I want my shifts to be smoother and all and i just think it's time, i also ordered the ss clutch so hopefully both of these mods will work wonders for me(not that anything is really wrong). I'd rather ask the org about this since i know most ppl here did go ahead and change there oil. Thanks for any and all input.

Uh. sounds like you're 5-speed since you're ordering a new clutch. In that case, change it... it's just gear oil.

In autos, there are people out there w/ over 100k on their cars w/o any tranny servicing. At this point, flushing the tranny may actually wash away clutch material causing the tranny to slip.

Dude is smart! You have no idea how many people do not understand this concept. I personally had it happen to me on a 89 Ford Tempo.

so if i let my motor oil in for 100,000 (if any is even left) I should just leave it in since it's used to it?

I'm going to inspect mine regularly after 30k and change as needed.
Well, wait to see any feedback from those that changed after 100k for some tesitmonial input.

I would definately post your question on http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

There seems to be some confusion on this thread between auto trannies and manual trannies. The original question is about manual trannies. I have never heard of "flushing" a manual trannie. You drain it and then put in new fluid. I did mine when my Max had 30 K miles on her and was sorry I had not done this at about 20 K miles.

Now that I have synthetic in the trannie, I will change again after about another 30 K miles. I would not worry about changing the fluid in a manual, even if you suspect it has never been changed before and your Max has over 100 K miles.

Basically i'm about to take out my tranny for a rear engine seal replacement and while i'm at it do a clutch job. Obviously some oil will leak out and what not...so i ordered amsoil 75w90 weight synthetic from Ed on the org. Since i'm gonna loose oil when i take out the tranny i might aswell just change it all because i'm not gonna add new oil to the old stuff.

And my max has 128,xxx now, but it seems that it's never been changed, but ppl say it helps with smoother shifts and just a smoother overall result so i think i'll try it.

I understand your concern b/c of others' input. But I say if it's going to be out just change it.

I don't see how you can relate this to motor oil. Motor oil is very different from auto tranny fluid. Putting new fluid in an auto tranny with 100K on it that has never had the fluid changed will strip the clutch packs down. It does this because it has very strong detergent in it and that breaks away all the old gunk which was the only thing holding the clutch packs together. You will get more life out of it if you just leave it alone in this type of situation. Of course, changing every 30K is what you HAVE to do to avoid this problem.

thanks for the information! i've been searching online everywhere to figure out what the reason was for not changing tranny fluid for autos.

anybody know what kind of tranny fluid i should use for my 01 v6 frontier?

I currently have 84,xxx miles on my 98 auto max. I bought the car recently at 75,xxx and was planning to change the tran. fluid. Should I change my trans fluid or just leave it because its getting near 100k miles. Also my driving habits are pretty aggressive (ie. redline once a day)

Choice is yours... Its kinda a double edged sword. My guess is that since you got the car at 75k the tranny fluid probably has been flushed at some point. So, I would go ahead and flush it. I think that there would be a problem if you knew that it had NEVER been changed and you had really high miles. I would do it if I were you.

I'm doing so much repair to my car within a week that i might aswell change my tranny fluid. It's a manual so when i take out my tranny i'll loose alot of oil, and when i change my rear engine seal i'll also have to do an oil change. I'm changing all the belts and bushings, basically everything i can get to since the tranny is coming out.

There's just one more question i have. What fluid do i need to fill up the clutch? I bought DOT3 SUPER HEAVY DUTY BREAK FLUID. This was bought straightup from the dealership along with every other part. OEM outlasts everything. The guy at the service dept. didn't know but i remeber reading it's dot3 break fluid for the clutch....can someone plz clarify this. Thanks.

Ok so here it is.. changeing it is a good idea.. and recomened.. but!!! nissan does not recomend the use of syn fulid.. in manual trans.. becasue manual trans work off of friction of the syncros and the synthetic works too good so just put like a penz oil or something like that.. a good brand gl-5 gear oil back in!

I thought that Nissan specified that you should only use GL-4 gear oil.

This is also the first time I've heard that Nissan specifically recommends against using synthetic gear oil in manual trannies. I have Redline in mine (for about 15 K miles) and have had no problems with the synchronizers. If this recommendation is true, I suspect Nissan only wants you to buy their OEM product rather than another companies synthetic product .

I've done alot of research before i purchased my tranny oil and thank god i did. I'm going to do a drain/fill and i purchased Amsoil 75w90 from Talkinghorse(ED) from the org. And i'm not doing any of this...my mechanic is so gl to him lol. I'm also doing a clutch job. So as my last post stated do i need dot3 break fluid for my clutch?

I have never heard/read where Nissan recommended against using synthetics. Bunches of our members are successfully using synthetic fluids in their MTs with improved shift quality and overall excellent results. If you have a documented source of your info, please let me know.

Additionally, Nissan does recommend using a GL-4 lube, not GL-5. GL-5 lubricants contain significantly higher quantities of EP additives than GL-4 lubes do, and those additives can be too aggressive for the metals used in the transaxle.

When I went to the Nissan Dealer one of the mecanics said that the tranny fluid should be changed every 50K. I'm doing mine now at 51K

My car has 18,xxx miles on it, and it shifts a little rough for my liking from 1-2 when cold (auto). Should I change my fluid via the drain and refill method using that hose connected to the radiator? The fluid is 4 years old now.
