5w-30 versus 10w-40
i was short on time and i had an oil change done at a shop i used to goto. The damn guy was putting in 10w-40 of this proline brand and I caught him right when he was finishing off the first quart. I told him to put in 5w-30 and he said sorry no can do. He then says to me that for older, higer mileage engines, it's better to use a thicker oil because there are gaps everywhere within the engine because of longtime use. I told him to shove it, didn't pay, and bounced.
I've been using 5w-30 for 2 years now and i have 10w-40 in there now. should I be worried? should I do more frequent oil changes for the next couple intervals to get all the 10w-40 out and 5w-30 in? i need to find a nice oil catch pan to store used oil. thanks for reading

You shouldn't worry too much...however, 5w-30 is the factory recommended oil...so I suggest you take it to another shop and have them put in 5w-30...
Walmart sells some nice oil cointainers...you can get a 15qt one (huge) for only like $8-$9

I was running 5W 30 Castrol GTX for a long time. That stuff feels like light machine oil when its hot and almost runs like water. I recently switched to Geman Castrol 0-W30 which is a little thicker. The engine runs a lot quieter.
I wouldnt freak out about the heavier weight oil.

I would not worry about the heavier weight oil for the summer, but certainly change to a lighter weight by fall.
I'm told that Honda now recommends only 5W20 weight oil for all of their engines in the USA. Now that is a light weight oil.
