FEELER: Intake Mid-Pipes-Updated with Progress Pics

UPDATE: 9/17/14

FS Thread is NOW active in the 5th gen classifieds. Powder coat units should be ready tomorrow. Link below
https://maxima.org/forums/5th-genera...ory-price.html

__________________________________________________ _________________________________________________

Hey Everyone!

Intro:

A few of your may know me...for those that do not-My name is Kunwardip but all my friends call me "Deep" I now own my 3rd 5th gen Maxima. I am in So-cal in North SD county. I used to go to the meets a few years back....

What this thread is about: (MODS please move this if necessary)

Another Prominent User on the Forums used to make Intake Mid Pipes (which from all my research are no longer made avaliable) Berk has also discontinued the Intake for the 5th gen to my knowledge.

Details: Perhaps a lot to read

I tried thru multiple sources to find a Mid pipe for my Intake setup; to no avail. I even reached out to ebay sellers that seemed to have a possible fitment for our car and asked if they would work with their suppliers to produce and sell just the Midpipes with no luck as well...

Many of the products/people(hope i dont offend anyone by listing them) that are dear to us are going out as of recent...(Cattman, Brian B. Berk, Maxima.org decals/Nilesh' Saggy trunk mats/Knigh_yz Midpipes...perhaps more)

I have decided to Take on at least one of these for now to keep a product available to my fellow community members. As you may imagine, A LOT of time involving /research/phone calls/emails and driving around goes into trying to jump-start something.....

I will be working hand in hand with one of the finest Welders in socal to produce the highly desired Mid-Pipes. I am in the final phases of working on all costs/materials.. They will be made of Aluminum; they will be offered in 4 and 6 inch variations with TIG? welded 5/8' Breather hoses approximately 4 inches in length. I have thought about making the breather "nipple" and inch in length and including a longer hose as part of a kit.

For the 6th gen/Altimas the battery trays being in a different orientation they need a slightly longer pipe (I will be working on offering those as well)

Each piece when finished will be shipped priority in a Box with actual shipping ($10.50) based on the costs involved I am attempting to offer this around $60-70 shipped but it could be slightly higher (based on kit.

To make it Fool-proof I am even considering offering full kits (Maf Adaters/Midpipe/Extended breather hose) Possibly Filters as well....

With all that said and out there....Can i ask the community to show their interest. Perhaps a Pre-sale of some at a discount to help kickoff

Sorry to make this lengthy...Anyone is more than encouraged to PM me, comment in the thread.
Thanks to ALL!

^^Fair enough. As its a feeler still in the production phase none are ready as of today. If all goes well I should have some made by end of week (next few days).

Till then...lets discuss if possible;
*is there as much interest in this as i thought so
*suggestions on changes?

Let me start off by saying that I appreciate your enthusiasm and eagerness to make a part for the community.

Now if I'm understanding you correctly, you plan to develop and sell only a mid-pipe, correct? Just like the one shown in the Ebay link below? Because if so, there are mid-pipes for sale on Ebay in all different colors from $39 to $45. Sure, you can't buy it by itself, but it does come complete with the crappy rubber couplers and crappy filter which can be used temporarily until silicone couplers and a proper filter is bought.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/FOR-95-99-MA...f16ad6&vxp=mtr

In a thread like this, a pic, schematic or simple sketch on the back of napkin needs to be posted.

^^I will honestly try to have a sample made in a few days as possible; and pics posted. Im just trying to fill a void where i see whilst contributing to the community...

The above link may be a32 specific (3.0 L); im not too sure if the o.d is 3 inches? Im sure the extra breather hoses that seem to be present on the product above could be capped off if desired.
I was basing all this on the popular Berk, Weapon-R Frankencar, Knight_yz's previous product made by him. To some degeree this is more targeted to 5.5 and plus gens perhaps. I will look into other variations as well if cost effective. Both Berk and Weapon R pipes sell/sold for DOUBLE my anticipated amount. I believe knight used to sell around 70-80$?

If the cost is a concern thats also what this thread is for...to help me guage interest and realistically "potential" because in the end i only need one. I wanted to make it available for those that wish for this set-up and a dead on fit.
I appreciate all the feedback i get.

^^Seems reasonably Priced. Im initially looking for a local source so i can see the product in hand. Realistically being a metal commodity shop discounts dont really exist lolz..

Whats your take on 3 O.D...yielding a 2.87 inch inner diameter? Does anyone recall what
was offered in the past? berks was 3 o.d. will the majority of the community be satisfied with that?

Me too. I've also used http://intakehoses.com/

Hopefully you find something you like at one of those places.

I would just go with whatever is popular and tried and true here on the Org. I'm not positive, but I would think a 3" O.D. would be easier to find the corresponding couplers, MAF adapters etc.

As for updates; the 5/8" tubing just shipped today after the holiday weekend. I hope to have it in hand later this week to move onto next step ( production)

I'd like a pipe to connect the MAF to the Throttle Body and also have a vacuum hose that fits.

PnP is not that simple if you go larger than stock.

I kinda figured... seems like my 3.0 gonna miss out on the intake since i don't plan to upgrade anything other than cosmetic stuff, one day I'll buy a 5.5 gen and swap with a 07 or 09 engine

Whats the material you're gonna use? Some good billet aluminum (something like 7075 alloy) I hope..

That's the only thing that is both smooth for airflow and has great heat dissipation. Otherwise, certain aluminum pipes will just get hot as Egypt in the summer..and they're not smooth....

Material will be 6061 aluminum. Both tubing options in hand are of this. Stainless steel was considered but rules out (largely due to heat soak) Some plastic materials were even considered as well (pretty sure never been done here on .org) This offers least heat retention....but had no luck finding the sizes.

For intake purposes this is the go to standard (6061)
The insides are as smooth as available as i shopped around. The wall thickness is true and consistent. Unlike a poor pipe where iv noticed (eyeballed even) unevenness in product.
This will be a strong well built intake; not a skinny soda can you can crush...

The only thing im not sure on is will i be able to find a powder coater reasonably priced or will i be doing rattle can specials

Here are some progress update pics...my micrometer is out of battery. Measurements pics coming as well. Both pics simply show the intake pipes cut to size. (6.5 and roughly 3.75 for shorty) Dont let the edges scare you...they will be completely de-burred after the welding. Still waiting on the 5/8 tubing to arrive....

Those are 2 mm walls. the tallest one (5th in pic from left) is a different piping. All others are purchased by me. breather tubes are approximately 2 inches from edge/in the center for the shorty versions.

the 3 inch ID piping is yet to be cut..whats pictured is the 72mm versions.
Its happening FOLKS YAY!
I also just realized i was shorted the amount of piping i shouldve received...been sitting for days...but just realized it today as i went into cutting. Initial batch may be smaller than anticipated but i just messaged the seller (we'll see how that goes)

Looking into one now...
but being "just" an intake...are people seriously opposed to a rattle canned job? flat/semi gloss black/silver. some decent primer and krylon fusion or duplicolor job. The part will seldom need removal once installed;
