Curious if anybody is using AAA services vs a towing policy on your insurance
For me it's an extra $140/6 mo to add necessary coverage to my insurance (geico, i don't carry collision, and only gives towing to the nearest location)
vs $90/year for AAA (100 miles towing)
car is a beast but getting up there in age and mileage, $90/year for piece of mind on a random breakdown seems reasonable (i think i paid $100 a year ago to get towed about 5 miles).

AAA policy here also. Unfortunately when I needed to use the policy for a tow last year, the AAA wrecker driver lost the car on the way to the garage.
It was snowing at the time and the wrecker driver dropped the car at a business a couple of blocks from the garage. The snow cover made it hard to find the car. There was no record of pickup and delivery other than a pickup had been requested.
A couple of days later I got a call from AAA asking where the car was located. As far as I knew the car had not been picked up by the first driver. There was no record of the pickup by AAA either. WTF??
Luckily I found the car parked in front of an arts and crafts store a couple of blocks from the garage. I was glad the store owner didn't have the car towed away to get it out of her driveway. She said she figured someone would come looking for the car sooner or later. I just happened to see the car parked up the street at that store when I was driving from the garage to the dealership to file a police report. What a FIASCO.

this. my gold card costs ***** nothing compared to what a private tow would be. when my Supra quit on me the driver even was able to back the car into my garage with his truck. ive gotten my Hilux towed twice as well without any questions, AMA pays for itself

AAA Premium/plus user here.
The primary reason I have it because when you own as many cars as I do, you want to deal with DMV as little as possible. W/o an appointment, the minimum wait time is always 2 hours. At the AAA office, I'm always in and out in 10-15 minutes. I like that after I get a smog, I can walk into AAA and walk out with my new registration and sticker. With DMV, I'd have to wait 2-3 weeks for the sticker to show up.
I've also used AAA to purchase cars when I couldn't have a friend come with me. The Premium service has benefited me on more than one occasion.
My alternator failed on my daily driver and I broke down once about 75 miles away from home, a few years ago when I was City consultant and had to commute far. I was so glad that day that I had the premium 100 mile tow option.
