Help Needed with Power Steering Belt replacement
This seemed like it would be such an easy job, but I am having a heck of a time replacing the power steering belt on my brothers 96 I30. The main accessory belt is easy, all you have to do is loosen the center bolt on the tensioner and untorque it and your ready to go. The power steering belt isnt as easy however, and I cant seem to be able to find an easy way to reach the belt tensioner bolt. Does anyone know a trick I may not know about, in terms of accessing the bolt? Any help would be greatly appreciated, im sure someone has a good write up about it. Thanks a lot.

I have had the best luck accessing the power steering adjustment screw from underneath the car. It is pointing down, so it seems like a natural thing to do. Loosening the lock nut is tricky as well. Sometimes I can get to it from the top of the engine compartment; try underneath on it as well.
You may need to loosen the pivot bolt also when replacing the belt. I have seen times where it was so tight that the belt would not loosen because the pump was not moving.

You must loosen the adjusting nut next to the power steering pully AND the bolt on the back side of the power steering oil pump. Once both are loosened, you should have enough wiggle room on the pully to remove the belt.

I had to loosen the power steering pump to remove the timing chain cover to do some tensioner repair. Like everyone said. What a PITA to work on the power steering pump. You can’t really see the bolts. You have to touch a feel your way around. I took the opportunity to put new belts on when I had to reassemble the whole darn thing. I hope I do not have to do that again for a long time.
