Failing PNP Switch?

Hey everyone.
In the past 6 months or so I've noticed the 'D' light on my Instrument Panel will flicker off at random when I'm sitting in heavy stop & go traffic. Flicking the shifter back and forth to N then D will get it back.
It seems to only happen during heavy traffic when I assume the transmission gets pretty toasty warm.
Two days ago leaving from a stop, it wouldn't shift and acted like I put it in Neutral for a few seconds, I can't recall if I bumped the lever cause I panicked briefly. It did kick back into gear but heavily.
Checking transmission fluid, it seems to be at the proper level, it's not too dark, doesn't smell burnt, didn't feel it though for particulate. It shifted fine for the last couple of days.

My question is, did it have a hiccup, or is the PNP switch just toasted and possibly causing my transmission to randomly shift to neutral, and can that also be causing the issue with my 'D' light on the dash?
How hard is that switch to change out?

Thanks!

Installing auxiliary transmission cooler should help lowering the temperature and prolonging its life.
