Sunshade stuck in the up position

Sunshade stuck in the up position
Is there a way to reset the sunshade? Mine is stuck in the up position and it seems to think that it is actually down. When I try to lower it the shade only moves a little bit and then pops back up but when I raise it the motor runs like it's actually raising it despite the fact that it's already up.

It sounds like something down the deck is bothering it to go down. Inspect the rear deck. Even if something little will bother, it may not work. I haven't heard of any reset procedure for the rear sunshade.

Check out page EL-272 of the shop manual.
There's a bi-directional motor, a slack detection switch, and an up-down limit switch.
If it's not an obstruction, the shade may no longer "know" where it can and should travel to. The limit switch likely has a reset procedure just like the drivers and passenger door windows. When I got my i30, the passenger window would go all the way up and then down a bit. Had to re-teach it where "up" was. I can't find any procedure for it, but maybe this will inspire someone to suggest something else:
From the FSM:
When sunshade is fully down, control unit stops to supply power to motor based on the signal from UP/DOWN limit switch.
Once the sunshade switch is pushed, the open or close operation will be continued until the control unit detects full open or full close based on the signal from UP/DOWN limit switch. During open or close operation of sunshade, the input signal from sunshade switch is ignored.
When control unit detects the slack of sunshade based on the signal from slack detection switch, the motor will be stopped. When control unit detects no slack of sunshade based on the signal from slack detection
switch, power is supplied again to motor after 1 sec. after no slack is detected.

I kept playing with the button last night (making it go up when it was already up and then trying to quickly get it to go down) and it eventually figured itself out. I don't think it was an obstruction I think it just didn't know where it was.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I'm so glad I'm not the only one
I have been having this same problem with mine. I have owned it for a year now and the car started doing this 3 months after I bought it. I am so glad to know that other people are having this problem and there might be a solution other than buying a whole new power shade. I just told my husband what everyone has posted on here so fingers crossed he can fix it with everyones information on here. Thanks for the info....

My 2010 Maxima has the shade stuck in the up position. I've only used the darn thing about 20 times in 7 years. The tech at Nissan says it will be $1,000 to replace. That sounds so crazy. It's just a flimsy sunshade and it's out of warranty. NUTS.

Possible workaround
I have a 2011 Maxima with the rear sunshade stuck in the up position.
What worked for me to "loosen" it was this:
1. Start with the shade in the fully-extended "up" position.
2. Press the down switch. The shade will try to lower but won't.
3. Press the switch up then down quickly, once, like a quick one-two count. This should trick the limiter and fully lower the shade.
It's not a fix, just a kludgey workaround. But better than spending hundreds of dollars to repair or replace it. :-)

I replaced my shade about a year ago with one I bought off eBay because it would get stuck in the up position. It worked for a little bit now it goes up irregularly if at all. I believe that the switch is the real problem, but I won't hassle with it again as I don't/didn't really use it much anyway.

My rear Sunshade got stuck... a third of the way up. The switch would operate the shade up or down about 1.5 inches, without ever fully retracting. Mine's an 03 with 44k miles.
I purchased a used sunshade on Ebay, advertised as working (shipped for $90), and got the car ready during the three days it took to receive the part. It took me about 2 hrs for disassembly and 1hr for reassembly.
Following Service Bulletin ITB00-039
all from inside the car:
01 Remove rear seat cushion: release a pull clip on each side, lift remove
02 Uncouple rear cushion heating element electrical connectors x 2, if so equipped
03 Remove side bolsters x 2
04 Remove seat belt anchors (was never clear why this was necessary)
05 Remove rear upper side finishing panels x 2 (attached well)
06 Remove three child seat anchor covers
07 Remove three black trunk access finishing panels via 6 fasteners
08 Remove the four double-layer twist fasteners at the front lip of the fuzzy parcel shelf cover
09 Uncouple rear CHMSL electrical connector x 1
10 Remove subwoofer grill
11 Remove fuzzy parcel shelf panel
12 Unscrew bolts anchoring Sunshade
13 Disconnect Sunshade elec plug
14 Lift out old Sunshade
Of course I don't know how long this unit will last, but the Service Bulletin's re-calibration instructions looked way more daunting than plug'n playing a used Sunshade. I still have the old one so I can scope that out and maybe figure out how to repair it. I understand part of the issue with shades is they go unused, so I plan on using this one... fingers crossed.
