Necromancy of a turbo car.

Hi all,

I have a complete everything build thread in the 4th gen section but I thought I would come in here and make a thread on my progress.

I originally picked this car up starting, not breaking 10mph, running insanely rough, like a lawnmower on meth rough.

This is a pic of the engine the day I picked it up.

The first thing to do was diagnostics, figure out why it was acting crazy. The owner got it in a craigslist trade, didn't have a good history of the car, didn't really know anything about it.

The first round of diagnostics came back with 2 of the coilpacks being torn and broken, so I replaced those. The engine still acted the same.

Then we did a compression test and found the rear bank about 7 pounds under spec, at that point I figured it was a timing problem and there is no point on doing a timing job on an engine that has 200k miles on it.

Ordered a new engine. 60k miles on it. Did all the maintenance you could think of on it while it was on a pallet.

On to the turbo.

It is a GSP (Godspeed) T3/T4 63 Trim
Ebay bov
Ebay intercooler kit

The engine side of the turbo looks legit

It has z32 pigtails, 550 cc injectors and Jim Wolf tuning.

The engine is currently out of the car, with the new fresh engine waiting to get in there make me proud.

The plan for the turbo is to go with a Holset hy42. Same bolt pattern as my current turbo so mounting shouldn't be an issue, a little smaller trim, 62 trim seems large to me, thoughts or suggestions here are needed/welcome.

I'll be going with a BLITZ bov, and some different intercooler piping, just for astetics, keeping the 2.5 diameter.

Tuning will be nistune, thats a given, I have to assume this car was built when nistune wasn't an option.

The car didn't have a wideband when I purchased it, I have purchased an AEM and it is going on with the new engine.

The car had a turbo timer, but it was... odd, I dunno how else to say it, but it wasn't a name brand that I recognize. I got an Apexi timer that is also going on the car.

I don't know about a boost control yet, will have to see once the car is up and running but I am prolly gonna go with a good old fashioned manual style for the time being, they are cheap and reliable.

It looks like the person who built the car initially cared a great deal about heat, and removing it. The car has 4 fans, and a gigantic mishimoto radiator.

So there we are. Really just about to get started on the turbo side of the car. I really hope it goes smoothy, but the side of me knows that I am messing around with a 20 year old nissan and... I know what is going to happen...

Interesting findings there.

One thing you can keep is the piping. It's all the same IMO. Have your powdercoat guy do something with them.

Meh... The couplings are light blue, the piping isn't black... Amazon has a black on black kit... 100 bones... Shrug... I'd brather get new couplings, hardware, and pipes. May as well...

You are right. I have a choice between a hx35 and an hy40. The hy has an interesting feature where it doesn't need a bov...

Hy40 is a vgt turbo from what I understand. I would keep it simple go with the hx35. With vgt need to figure out a controller to run the vgt side to control boost. Wold still need a bov unless it's built into the compressor housing.

Hx35 should be nice for the 3.0

I have some 550cc injectors if you need em.

I loved my turbo max and if I had a chance I would do it again. I have a wrx now and I'm getting old too lol. You don't need a turbo timer when running full synthetic, other than cool factor to say I have a turbo car, and when I get out it stays running. I never had any mechanical issues with that car, it was always electrical and it was turboed for 5 years.

update time:

Who likes custom turbo exhaust work?????

I have had a reverse y pipe made. But because my car is significantly low, we wanted to tuck it into the body as much as possible...

here is the pipe,

that's the wastegate getting fitted...

now that's all well and good, but here is the part that will get you a little

we have already reinforced that motor mount (and replaced the bushings with oem... again because we were down there and it just seemed like a good idea...)

But that crossmember isn't that hard to move, assuming you have a lift and a screw jack handy to hold up the engine, but getting the pipe in that gap has moved it super close to the body and there is no worry about dragging or smacking that pipe anywhere.

(since turbo is where battery would be... I figured this would be relevant)

Now, on to some nifty stuff. My battery is in the trunk, in the spare wheel well specifically. Well I think that a raw trunk with a battery in it looks a bit crap. So i had the local custom stereo people make me a trunk floor that looks a wee bit better.

That looks much better. The little plexi glass hole is over the battery and you can look in and see it surrounded by green leds... its the small things...

Now this is how she looks at the moment. New wheels on, waiting on the magnaflow muffler (because megan fartcan is... well... megan fartcan)

Not bad eh?

And finally the engine is all buttoned up and back together. I have ordered black intercooler piping and a black intercooler... because those couplings don't really (imho) look all that good. I also have the flanges for my ssq bov that are coming in so I can get rid of the blue one... which is a no name ebay one... and that scares me a bit...

This does not mean I am done... Nay...

I still have to do:

Heat wrap headers
Heat wrap new y pipe
Turbo blanket turbo
Wideband
Turbo timer
Headlights
FSTB

After I do all these things (this week or so)

I will then focus my attention on the outside of the car.

I picked up this little beauty from a maxima horder...
