Restoring My ROTA P45R - First Timer Here - Pics
So, last year I got my Hyper Black P45R ROTA rims 18x9.5. I made the mistake of driving the car with no mud flaps. The rear rims got hit by anything the front wheels picked up. Since they are 9.5 wide the fronts stick out and as time went by the rims hard rock chips in them. Great!!
I finally got myself an 80 gallon compressor with a built in regulator which is damn awesome! I went to my local pricessauto and got a paint gun and orbital 6" sander (both on sale).
So I started off by sanding the lip of the rim to bare metal as that's where the majority of the rock chips where. Thank god I got the orbital sander, it helped so much and made the job easy. After the lip I just sanded the rims everywhere I could to get rid of any glossiness so the primer can stick on better. I used a 600grit sand paper.
So currently As they sit to dry, they are primered. Tomorrow i'm going to use some bondo glaze to fill any little imperfections which I have seen here and there.
This is my first time painting with a spray gun/ sanding rims. So not bad, I say .
Paint are as follows:
Tremclad: Rust Oxide for Primer
Armorcoat: Flat Black for Base
Some matte clear coat (no glossiness)

This rim will need some extra love, I used some more aggressive sand paper and it shows will touch it up and give her another coat tomorrow. All the other rims I used 600 grit.
As they sit on my lawn right now....Thank god I live in the country

The compressor was a steal, 800 Canadian. They run around $950 at Lowes her in Canada without the regulator/dual outputs. I did buy it from another guy but it was brand new. Came withh a reel + 50 foot of hose, an extra 50 foot hose and compressor fittings . The rims are on Ebay for like 750 or so.
600 grit all around. I only used 60 on that one rim which was to rough (can be seen in the picture). After that mistake if I had any rock chips other then on the lip I used the 60 grit, then smoothed it out with the 600 grit.

gotcha..yea...that low grit is a beast to get smooth...when i started from 60 grit on my G35 wheels...i worked my way all the way up in the grit..but it worked eventually..that and i had to use some bondo..but oh well

It a lesson that must be learnt...lol, the lower grit does the job quick but then it takes time to get it smooth. Gotta remember paint fills very very little. I'm painting the rims black so it won't show as much as if it was glossy black.
I just applied the spot putty. Will sand it off with 600grit when I go back outside. Or maybe run to the local store and get 1000grit. Think i'll do that.

second round of primer is on, hopefully the weather cooperates and I can give them 2 coats of base tomorrow
It sucks painting outside cause you can really see the small debris. Sure its not a lot but gah >_<. I'll just do a light 1500grit sand before I do the base

Glad I did this myself and didn't go get it painted by someone else, lots of fun!

Hey, Thanks everyone! I have to redo 2 as when I was painting them outside some crap fell on them. On my last coat before clear coat It's only 2 spokes so its not bad. Also I have random super small particles here and there but you really have to look for them. Again it's because the work was done outside. At least I put them in the garage today so nothing falls on them while they dry.
Thanks for the support I'll take pics for sure when they are on the car

I originally wanted flatblack. The only color with black I could get was one with the red lip. So I got the hyperblack.
Built my car tent. Sandly it just fits my car (wish it would be a couple of feet more. Ohh wellz.
Now I can do the last few coats dust free! Should be done this weekend. Don't mind the dirt. I'll vacuum the shi t out off it

Finally got all my rims painted nicely, no specs of crap or anything in it. Then I start to do my clear coat. I start spraying and these random white spots are appearing on my rims. Like drywall dust (its what it looked like). omg i'm so freaking mad its retarded. I spent so much time to get this **** perfected and to have this happen on my last coat. REALLY!!!!?!?!?
Heres to hoping that tomorrow when I wet sand this mother ****er with 1500 grit that those white random *** mother ****ing specs of white don't show.

Morning update. I went to check on rims this morning. The white stuff can be picked off easily. Hope to have pictures up tonight of the final product if all turns out well.
Also on a side note. I think this white stuff was the latex I tried spraying my first time using the gun. I never cut it down properly and it was to thick. I spent hours trying to clean it all out without success. Guess when I was priming and base coating I never saw it because it would just change to the color of the paint. Kinda explains why I get random little sand grains look alikes. Ohh well live and learn. Just hope I can remedy this with a very light sand and I'll be happy as a kite.
