I can't hit 13's

My last visit to the track was May 24 @ NE Dragway.
It was a nice cool night, and even though I got in 10 runs and I was consistent, my best time was a 14.22 @99.23 with a 2.3 60'. Oddly enough my worst time was a 14.48@98.33 with a passenger and a 2.41 60'.

I was running Kumho ecsta 235/50/17(I know their the wrong size) on stock wheels.
The mods that are track related are:
Stillen/ Frankencar Intake
Cattman y-pipe
Cattman Cattback

My friend has a wrx with stage 2 programmer & exhaust. His best run is a 13.85 with 1.96 60'. His traps were in the 98's. What can I do to match him in the fall? I'm thinking some used dr's on 16's?
If I can pull a 2.1 or 2.05 60's I should be right there, no?

Thanks

MAXSE5SPD Jul 20, 2006 08:02 AM

me thinks that a good idea. im in the exact same situation. i ran on tues and got a 14.23 @ 98.18. but the weather was crappy for tracion.

Bruceman Jul 20, 2006 08:15 AM

Not to get off topic but I'm lookin to do headers for next season after emissions in january. What's your opinion of hotshot?

MAXSE5SPD Jul 20, 2006 08:34 AM

well, i baught the car with headers on so i cant give a comparison between stock exhaust and headers, but i know that they look a whole lot better and they make a huge difference for 4.5gen guys.

The 99.3MPH trap shows you have good power. The 60' says you need to do something serious about your tires. And kick out the passenger and everything else that isn't bolted down. That's a decent ET for N/A. You can do better.

I've used BFG 255/50/16 DRs on 7.5" wheels with good results. (but real slicks are better). They put 9.7 inches of rubber on the ground. Since they're DOT-legal, you can drive to the track. Get some, practice launching until you're sick of it, run a 13.9, gloat.
:bustrun:

Bruceman Jul 20, 2006 02:29 PM

Do you need to use spacers with 255's?
Know where I can get a pair of used dr's since I only go to the track 3-4 times a year?

Nealoc187 Jul 20, 2006 02:44 PM

No you won't need spacers assuming your wheels have a normal-ish width and offset.

If you are considering buying a set of wheels and tires specifically for the track, don't mess with DRs. Go straight for the slicks.

Have you tried running at Lebanon Valley? I wouldn't even waste my time at New England Dragway on a street night, track prep is non-existant and the track is usually very dirty. All the times I've raced there was a chorus of rocks and debris pinging the bottom of my car, not to mention 2.4~2.7 60' foots. I haven't gone in a while and most likely will never go again, last year I got into an argument with one of the inspection dopes about 3 small (around 1 mm) dings on my windshield, I got refunded my cash and never looked back. The rules are the rules but those guys are real anal, Krismax runs low 13s at Lebanon without a helmet and his car is barely held together as it is.

Goto Lebanon on a weekend test and tune session. It costs a bit more ($30) and you only get a few runs in all. But I've never seen so much VHT sprayed on a track and you have to at least spin the wheels at the staging area. Alot of 8~11 second cars run and they need to keep them guys happy and the track clean.

My best run was a 2.28 60' foot and 14.5 @ 95. I have a full DEK engine swap, I/Y/E, and my SMT-6 tune. I run on 225/50/15 Toyo T1-S on I30T BBS wheels (34 pound combo). Measured weight was 3230 pounds with me in the car. Not to mention Im a slow shifter with about 15 1/4 mile runs of experience. With good driving and 5.5 gen power you will be in 13 second territory IMO.

If I go to slicks, isn't there more risk of killin my clutch or drivetrain? Is it worth the risk?

Maybe that's why I got 10 runs in. Everyone was at Lebanon. I went to Lebanon last year and got 5 runs in. I got my best 60' of 2.27 there. Thanks for the input.

Not for Maximas apparently...

The guy just looked at my car for a few seconds and had me open the hood to check for nitrous. That was my tech in...

Bruceman Jul 21, 2006 04:17 AM

Just wondering if I'm really going to see results putting on stickies w/o stiffening up my suspension. It's still stock. Will I still lose traction because of weight transfer?

DandyMax Jul 21, 2006 07:04 AM

Yes you'll have weight transfer but slicks will give a tenth or two better 60 fts than streets if you can drive, even without a good suspension. I have seen 4th gen's for example, pull 2.0 60 fts on slicks and stock SE suspension with raceweights in the 3200lb area.

Bruceman Jul 21, 2006 12:16 PM

Thanks for the heads up dandymax.

Ceasars Chariot Jul 21, 2006 01:05 PM

good runs bruce !

Bruceman Jul 22, 2006 03:30 AM

Thanks Ceasar. But you know as well as I do if I didn't get a 13.99 it wasn't good enough.

Nismo3112 Jul 23, 2006 08:47 PM

I remember I ran alot of 14.0's and 14.1's with 2.2 60 ft's, but my 13.8 pass was with a 2.3..

What was your trap speed on the 13.8 run? Was that w/ a max or the IS?

100.31. maxima.

Bruceman Jul 25, 2006 12:10 PM

Was that before or after the 350 plenum?

DTR Maxima Aug 6, 2006 10:57 PM

If you are looking to beat your friends wrx and he running 13.8's @ 98mph with Cobb Stage2 then just hope he doesn't learn how to drive. That setup is capable of much better times with a better driver.

Back when I was running a similar setup to that in my wrx I running 13.3's @ 101mph.
