Video @ Milan/ looks like I need slicks to break into the 12's
Hi Guys: I went to the track last week w/ my son, and both of use did not get a good ET, his ET was in the 2.3 60' on MT street tires, and I did 2.35 & 2.48, and what ever I do I break loose 1st & 2nd w/ Nittos DR 20psi, and the Tockico Illumina adjusted @ fronts 3 rears 5. Any input will be appreciated .

What was your et? It sounded like you broke your tires loose fairly easily. What you said at the end of the vid says it all! You need slicks. I'm in the same boat with my nitrous kit. I don't have the traction to handle the power. Sweet car by the way!
|
What did your run?? That vid was like watching a real good show and when it gets to the climax the power goes out.
|
All I have to say is your son's Civic is definitely laying down some good numbers to be trapping 120mph, very impressive. I'm willing to bet you pulled some pretty crappy times because everytime you cut it off and everytime the Civic ran you showed them. Post 'em up...they can't be that bad...
|
Hey man come on down to martin and let me drive it. I will get it in 12's without slicks. Now i will tell ya it took me getting slicks to hit 12's but my power band is a whole lot different than yours. On a serious note, call my cell man. We can setup a time to go to martin or stanton. Either or.
|
Yeah.... where's the end of the vid. Sweet that you are super charged though. Strange how everyone got a jump on the Civic, why was that? Spinning out of the hole?
The Mustang that gave you a tight race, was that Cobra? |

+ 1.... |
Nice set up, but you are going to have a hard time catching traction on any sort of tire with 20 psi. I went down to 18psi at MAXUS and could not catch traction, I was lowering them to 15 psi just before I got thrown out. I am guessing you make more power than I do looking at your set up, I would defiantly try 15 or a little lower psi before you give up on the drag radials. I ran 13.1x @~108 with a 2.3x 60' when the car was hot. I am sure you can dip into the 12's with my current set up, and judging by your power levels you should be able to too.
|
Yea, drag radials put them into the dumpster. Go get some slicks. Best I did is 12.9 @ 116mph with drag radials and spinning all of first and second. I`m switching to slicks, too.

I will try next week to go to the track, and lower the tires to15psi,and adjust the front struts to 5, and see what happens. What is your trick that you can get it in to the 12s?

DRs can work just fine you just have to learn to pedal the car some, can't just mash it and go. Most people don't bother to try to learn how to do that though. I pulled mid 1.9s on my Nitto DRs, pedalling.
You are also running too much pressure in them in my opinion, but that pressure difference won't cure your launches, it's just icing on the cake when you get a proper launch technique down. There's no reason you shouldn't be cutting at least 2.1s on those tires, with an average launch. 2.3s and 2.3s just show that you need more track time on them. |

I would never buy DRs as track tires for a FWD car, I used them as street tires and only used them at the track when I didn't feel like putting the slicks on. DRs are definitely better than street tires but nowhere near as good as slicks on high powered FWD cars.
|
Ummm, yea that what I was telling the op. Not to go with DRs, and go with slicks at the track. As I already found out.
|
I was agreeing with you.........
|
Nice setup. Def get some slicks.

What psi to have on DR's, and on Slicks? Thanks. |
My DRs were at 12psi that day according to the timeslips (I write on each one the details of the run) and slicks I run about 11psi. I usually start a couple PSI higher, like 13psi or 14psi, and drop half pound increments until my times stop improving or I start to see the trap speed go down. My runs are generally consistent enough on a tire that I can tell when I've reached the optimum tire pressure.
