I've recently noticed...
 

an intermittent scraping noise coming from the drivers side rear wheel area of my 88 Maxima. I just put some new tires on it about a week ago and soon after started hearing this occasional scraping sound, usually worse when I hit some bumps.

Anyone ever have this problem?...anyone?...

mayb your tires are too big? hwo big r your new wheels?

Your back brake pads are probably worn down too far. They are supposed to do that when they're worn down so you know to get them changed. It's just a coincidence that it happened the same time that you got your tires.

Shimoto, I don't have big, aftermarket rims, but thanks for the reply. The new tires are Bridgestone 195 60 15inch, which are the recommended tire size for the stock rims it rides on.

Thanks Charles, that is kind of what I thought it sounded like but it scrapes whether the brakes are applied or not. I put new front bakes on a couple of months ago and thought the back brakes would need replacing soon...

Charles is right...

If you car has the rear disc, it could be you rear rotor is
warped slightly.

Might also be you emergency brake not releasing completely.

warped slightly?....if theres a rubbing sound all the time then its more than just slightly..

get in ehter and see if some junk isnt just stuck in there....i pulled a burger king lid out of my air intake hose the other day but it made a different sound and thats completely unrelated

He stated that the scraping noise was intermittent...

So I took it as it didn't scrape all the time...

well still brakes applied or not theres a sound...itd be one hell of a warped disc

I have the same problem with my car, happens every so often. I discovered that it was the plastic guards inside the wheel-well were rubbing slightly against the tires on bumps and some sharper turns. I figured you can't expect much for some 15+ year old shields, they will probably hang so I just fastened them back into place and havn't had the problem since

the brake "squealers" you guys refering to shouldn't cause a grinding sound at all unless the brake pad is ground right down to the metal and would score the hell out of your rotars

check out those plastic guards, I could be wrong but it's worth a shot..also pull off those wheels and check your rotors for gouges just to make sure it didn't pick up some really coarse road dust somewhere.

my discs are pretty screwed up they squeal and the fronts are warped...when i get a job...probally seccond pay check (because the first will be the celebration/get rid of crappy computer parts check) i am going to replace the discs or have them remachined and get new pads.

i was thinking of getting drilled but not slotted discs because theresa alot of wet weather here but those things be mighty expencive

Save up for brembo cross-drilled rotors! Only $199 for the front pair and $189 for the rear pair! :D

I just replaced the rear rotors on my 86 wagon last September
because one was warped slightly...

As I spun the wheel I could hear where the rotor hit the
caliper/pads then it didn't, then it did, etc...

I tried to have them turned, but they were below spec.

I had the new rotors trued to be safe, now there's no
noise at all...


Have you updated your web site concerning the turbo???

The "squealers" that you're referring to are the wear indicators.

They only make a noise when the brake pads have worn down
to an unacceptable thickness.

Good point about the guards... could be that as well. :D

Are those the rotors that Summit sells?

Are the rotors solid or vented (aside from being drilled!)?
