5 lug conversion is nearing....

I have almost all the parts I need. I picked up 92 SE calipers, rotors, and caliper brackets today. I have the front spindles, hub, bearing, rotors, and rear hubs...I'm going to attempt to utilize just the hub first. I saw how easy they come off and I believe it's a direct swap...if not, I have the lower strut housing which I can just swap what I need. Also picked up a hole new set of lugs since my stock ones will not work, and I'm 4 short. I will be bolting up a set of 97 I30 rims first. Then when I get money, I will buy tires and bolt up the 18's I have. I will take pics and try to get a more detailed write up of the process...but I still want to thank rogertight for pioneering this.

If time allows, I may do this memorial day (Monday). Jeff you interested in helping me out?

Are you going to keep the rear disc or convert to drums?

Scott

maximase86 05-26-2004 08:22 AM

Going to keep disc. I have a set of caliper, caliper brackets, and rotors off a 92 SE. No way in hell I'm going to drums! :D

S

Jeff92se 05-26-2004 09:48 AM

Where do you want to do this?

maximase86 05-26-2004 10:42 AM

I'm thinking maybe Dave's, since then we will have access to Ian's tools. I still need to clear it with Dave first, so I will let you know how that goes.

S

maximase86 05-26-2004 10:45 AM

BTW Jeff, do you happen to have a 36mm socket to remove the front axle bolts? I also need to find the size for the rears since I don't have them.

S

Jeff92se 05-26-2004 10:49 AM

Yup. I have something that will work. 3/4" breaker bar also avail.

maximase86 05-26-2004 11:07 AM

Werd, probably will need it. :D

S

maximase86 05-26-2004 11:10 AM

Cool, looks like we will do it Monday. I plan on starting at 10am most likely. It will be at Dave's garage.

S

Jeff92se 05-27-2004 08:57 AM

Ok. Sounds good. Charles coming too?? :grinno: :goofy: :shy:

Oh, look at this!

Jeff92se 05-27-2004 07:14 PM

Screw the parts, fix your grass! hehe

How are the shocks on the 3-gen struts? I hope they are okay.

maximase86 05-28-2004 06:29 AM

Well I'm not going to use the 3rd gen struts. I plan on keeping my springs and struts I have now. I'm not completely sure how good of condition they are in since I got these parts from littlepiggie as is.

Oh yeah on my lawn....I spent many years trying to get it nice...and it keeps failing! So I kinda gave up!

I was thinking that the Max went to rear drums after the 88 model year.

Or was that just the 89/90 models with the rest going back to disc?

That's why I asked about converting to drums, I was thinking that
the 92 had drum rears, and with all the fun issues the second gens
have with their rear calipers, I thought you'd switch to drums...

Guess that's what I get for thinking! :slap:

Well, IIRC, 89-94 GXE's without ABS received drums in the rear. All SE, with/without ABS, and GXE's with ABS received discs in the back.

S

maximase86 06-01-2004 06:58 AM

Alright. The conversion was half successful. My fronts are done. How ever we ran into a problem. You CAN NOT use GXE rear hubs if it has drum brakes. You must find SE hubs, or GXE with ABS disc hubs. That is what I have to do....all I can say is fun!

S

maximase86 06-01-2004 07:03 AM

BTW, Jeff, can you check the sockets you took, I'm missing two of my caliper bolts, we had to find ones that worked with washers.

S

Jeff92se 06-01-2004 07:21 AM

I didn't take any bolts. The caliper bolts:

I saw both rear caliper bolts on the ground. I'm referring to the passenger side I was working on. Maybe someone used them for your lower swaybar mount??

And the verdict so far???

Was it just a straight bolt in swap?

Scott

maximase86 06-01-2004 01:30 PM

No....no verdict so far...the project isn't complete.

Oh Jeff guess what. The hubs were fine. The spindles won't work. I ended up getting the spindle and hubs from the car they were off of. Interestingly, the spindle is different. I'll try to get pics of it sometime and show you what I mean. As for the caliper bolts....that's where I thought they we're too...but they are long gone, so I need to find something.

S

Jeff92se 06-01-2004 02:15 PM

Well that's good! You should have took the set of parallel links while you were at it. So you could get adjustable camber in the rear.

maximase86 06-01-2004 08:10 PM

Yeah, I should of huh? Well one down side though, the car it came off....another aztec red 92 SE (what gives with that? that's the 2nd one I've seen in a yard) has the left rear corner of the car missing.....like half the bumper, quarter panel, frame ect. So I don't know if I would of been able to get them.

Oh to add insult to injury....the article you gave me says we can't use GXE spindles.....lovely. I've learned my lesson....don't cut corners on reasearch.

Anyway, here are the pics comparing the spindles:

Right click, save as.
http://www.cyberhub.net/sarin/SE Spindle and Hub.zip

I still need caliper bolts, and RSB bolts....and I'm missing 2 strut tower bolts that I should probably try to look for.

Jeff are you still going to notch out that other glandpack btw?

S

Jeff92se 06-01-2004 08:21 PM

I can have them cut down tomorrow I believe.

maximase86 06-02-2004 06:45 AM

This is going to be stickied:) Congrats so far Sarin! Cant wait to see the final product. If this all works out I might just try this too and just screw the 16 inch 6 spoke 00-01 Sentra SE rims I was thinking of getting.

maximase86 06-02-2004 10:33 AM

Werd. I'll be sure to include a write up. Hopefully it will be done soon. Also for the record...i'm the 2nd guy to do this. It has been done once....but I seem to have hit the difficult end because I had wrong parts/rusted parts etc.

S

max95q 06-02-2004 08:12 PM

Thanks Sarin! Who was the other guy? Is he an org member?

maximase86 06-02-2004 10:17 PM

The other guy is rogertight on the 2nd gen yahoo group. He was the first guy that go it to work....though I'm still scratching my head how he pulled it off so easily.

S

maximase86 06-02-2004 10:20 PM

Wow. I don't know where to begin. I have to say this was the worst project on my car as far as problems, and parts are concerned. It appeared the Roger had it pretty easy....but that was not the case for me. Maybe because I have so many problems, I can point at things that others may consider if they do this. Would I do this mod again....probably not....unless I had all the right parts in the first place. Anyhow, here it goes: Fronts. Easy. Spindle to strut arms had to be grinded, but I do notice that the passenger side may need more work. The alignment had gone all to **** after this was done, and it took firestone 3-4 hours just to get my car almost completely into spec. The camber is still off by a few negative tenths of a degree...just enough to be outside the recommended range. I will need to buy camber bolts...but I will worry about this later when I get new springs. Rears.....hell. First I find I had the wrong parts to do the rear. You can not use the rear GXE drum spindles. It just won't work. I got 92SE spindles, hubs, brackets, struts, springs, and calipers....better outcome....until it came time to it came time to mount the rotors....guess what, I have a crack in my rotor....great. So I need new rotors. Then come to find, my parking brake uses a different hook...so now I need to order a 92SE parking brake cable, with the appropriate ends. Then I find out since my original RSB bolts stripped, the next closest bolts are too long. So I can't bolt my RSB back up. Lovely. Either way it's done. Here is a nifty little pic for all of your enjoyment.

wonderful conversion, i might do it on my U12 as well, might.. in the mean time, Maximase86, what plan u got with the old rims? I'm ISO a 2nd set..

maximase86 06-16-2004 07:47 PM

I would like to sell my old rims, $25 a wheel with tires + cost of shipping. Two have really good tread on it, two have really bad wear on the inside threads and need to be replaced.

sarin,
So when are you going to put the other wheels on there? The 18's? I like what you did with the conversion, I have never like those I30 wheels though.

maximase86 08-06-2004 09:22 AM

The 18's will probably be on sometime after the 15th. I'm getting tires for them finally! They will be my late spring-summer-early fall wheels, and the I30 rims will be my fall-winter-early spring ones. I also realize I still need to make a write-up. I will try to work on it this weekend.

S

Man, I wish you did not already have your 18's, I am trying to get rid of the ones on my fourth gen now...oh well....good luck with the 18's.

maximase86 08-23-2004 08:01 PM

Don't feel bad...I'm trying to get rid of my stock 15's with no luck at all! :P

S

cardana24 08-24-2004 05:20 AM

I sold my 18's less than a week of getting my new wheels. As far as my stock second gen wheels I will probably just hang on to those since they seem to be very light. Maybe I will take it to the track one day if I ever feel as if it it running smooth enough, because its def. faster than it used to be.
