I would reply but I have never had that problem or heard of it. It kind stumps me, maybe if you were able to record this sound and post it or describe it better. Also do you know exactly where the sound is comming from?

Hey man- I just joined and it seems that there are few of us out there. I have a 1988 Maxima SE- 175,000 miles, standard shift, 3.0 V6 and all that. Are there any others that have this car besides us? I just bought this car Friday and I am looking forward to learning more about it. Write me back and tell me about yours. Thanks- youthmin26

Well if you must know

Mine is a 1988 Maxima GXE auto 3.0 liter v6, no mods done yet plan on new intake system very soon. I currently have 138,000+ miles on it. Shes a real beauty! I have had her for a while. I plan on(since I ve been promoted) to actually do some stuff to it. First is the racing intake system. Some how Ill have to get someone to do this for me. Ill ask some racing shops around here. then after that its either lowering it, or putting some rims on it then lowering it 1.5 inches. Where do you live?

Re: Well if you must know

I am from Lexington, Ky. The only problem that I can see with this car so far is that the passenger side power window doesn't work. I have heard that this is a problem with Maximas. I can roll it down from the driver's side, but the passenger side control doesn't work. Other than that, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the car, even at 175,000 miles. It has a new timing belt (how long do they last?) new alternator, new battery, new brakes, tires with 5000 miles on them, new exhaust system, new fuel injectors (recalled), and a new clutch (3 years old). The only thing I can see immediate need to take care of is a little bit of faded paint on the hood and roof. My brother has recommended some stuff that reduces paint-fading and I might try that, or I might just get a new paint job altogether. What do you think?

id say go for the stuff that reduces paint fade

and if it stilll doesnt look good, go for the new piant job if your willing to spend $$ on the car.

I have an 88 too with a few mods done. If window works from drivers side I would try looking at the passender side window switch or a relay over there that might have gone bad.

Thanks for the reply. As soon as I have some time, I will take a look at the switch, however, I am no electrician. How much does the shop manual for the 88 SE cost? Any idea?

Timing belt replacing

Manuals STRONGLY recommend to replace the timing belt (VG30 engine) with the new one every 60k miles. Broken belt means that pistons inevitably hit valves...bang bang bang = $ for trailer + $$ for the parts + $$$ for job. Totally much more than $1k.
Also it's a good idea to replace all the belts simultaneously because to replace the timing belt you have to take off all the other ones.

Good luck,
DDD.

Re: ooooh I want a shop manual too

I have heard that the Haynes manual is a good starting one, but I have also heard that it leaves out several things that might be important. If you know nothing about the car, like me, it would be a good one to start with. I am going to get that one first, and then move on to the complete shop manual. Go to http://www.haynes.com and I think you can order them there. Good luck

I have the haynes one already.

its alright you can get it at your local auto shop. Like autozone. It does leave out some parts that would be helpful. I heard that some ppl have the actual shop manuals, that have everything that you would need to know aout the car. Thats the one I want.
