The radio in my 1987 Nissan Maxima won't play tapes. They go in, but then they just start flipping sides. Anyone know what is wrong? I would greatly appreciate your help in fixing it.

spindles aren't strong enough to turn the tape?

just speculation on my part.. but a tape flips sides when it can no longer roll the tape, if the spindles can't turn at all, then it the player might just flip sides because of it.. dont know how to repair it, or if its even a consideration for what might be wrong.. just my $.02.. sorry if its complete horsesh..

That makes sense. Maybe it insn't getting enough power to turn the spindles. Hm... Maybe I should take it to an electronics shop.

Forget about taking that old radio to get fixed. They'll probably charge you as much as it would cost to get a new one. Besides, new aftermarket head units are far superior to that old stock unit. You can even get full size units that can play CD's and casettes if you still want to listen to those old tapes. If you have a lot of music on tapes, I'd suggest downloading all of the music that you have on tapes off of an internet site like audiogalaxy.com, and then burning them on to CD's, that way you have digital quality audio that will last a long time.

Just buy mine!

I've got an '87 GXE that I installed an aftermarket system in. I no longer need my old deck/equ. They are just sitting quietly in a box, in excellent condition. I was just going to keep them for when I sell the car years down the road (it's only got 90k+ miles on it).

I used them for one week before I installed my new system. My Great Aunt (75+ years old) owned the car before me, so I would say the deck and equ. are like-new.

If you are interested, keep in mind that the SE and GXE decks are different, so mine would only work for you if you have a GXE.

Mine did that too, I couldn't find out what the problem was so I went and got a CD player.

I opened it up and the head unit wasn't locking, a spring had broken off. Now I have a Sony CDX650.

just a suggestion, but the radio plays stuff off the airwaves so of course it wont play tapes. try using the cassette deck :wall:
