My old battle wagon just turned on 225k on Christmas day. I bought it in NC, and it made several trips to NY, and the move back to TX. When I bought the car, it had 191k on it.

The extent of my repairs to the car to date have been :

distributor
CV half-shafts
outter tie-rod ends
front struts

need to get a new rack, P/S pump & air regulator...not too shabby for a car with that many miles - and I know it wasn't babied!

DatsunZ Jan 16, 2002 05:28 PM

My '80 Datsun 280ZX(same motor as 1st gen maximas, but .4 extra liters) has 148k on it, my '77 280Z has 160k(lost a lash pad and messed the motor up, some one over-reved it), my 83 280ZXT parts car has 147k on it, the motor is going into my 77 :) I know those are pretty low mileage to be L series powered cars but I just thought I'd list them anyway. Theres guys at Zcar.com with 300k on theirs.

If you take good care of these wonderful nissan motors they will last you forever.

Long live the L-series!!!!

still running

mine has almost 210K and is still running strong, although the mpg is about 21 mix city and hwy.
if i replace the EGR valve, will that improve mpg?

199K miles on 87 SE auto with original motor, runs perfectly and doesn't blow any smoke. Here's what I've done in the past 6 months to resurrect it:

Fuel Pressure Regulator $56
Fuel Pump $112
O2 Sensor $62
Cylinder Head Temp Sensor $20
Spark Plug Wires $52
Cap & Rotor $30
Fuel Filter $10
Fuel Injector Harnesses $37
Valve Cover Gaskets $17
Fuel Injector Kit $298
Front Fenders $165
Motor Mount (rear) $128
Motor Mount (front) $105
Transmission Mount (front) $90
Transmission Mount (rear) $105
CV Boots/Axles $113
Master Cylinder $28
Transmission seals $18
Battery $50
Exhaust manifold $86
Exhaust studs and gaskets (front and rear) $85
PS pump rebuild kit $20
Rebuilt transmission with shift kit $1341

Except for the axles and transmission rebuild, all parts were ordered from Courtesy Nissan in Texas which saved me a TON of money. I'm hoping to get at least another 100K miles out of this car and I see no reason why it won't. Only thing I have left to do is replace the timing belt and tensioner. My brother "ChrisVogt" has my old 87 5-speed and, like he said, it has 211K original miles and runs awesome. These cars just won't die if you take care of them.

I have an 86 Nissan hardbody pickup - daily commuter - 292000 and it still has the original hoses, changed the fan belt at 286000. Engine has never been apart. I change the oil and filter every 3000 miles - that's it. It just keeps on running.

Freedog Feb 24, 2002 07:22 AM

I had an '87 SE that I loved. It started getting needy at about 150,000 miles. Nothing major, alternater, timing belt, water pump, etc. I drove it until 5th gear decided it had had enough at about 160,000 miles and put a hole in the case. I would have fixed the tranny and kept it but, I was stationed in England at the time and it would have been a major hassle that I didn't have time for. I sold the car to a friend and he was still driving it (with the bad tranny) when I left.

It should. The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) recirculates exhaust gases into the engine to make sure the fuel is burned before exiting the engine.

I have 192k on my 88GXE.

87MAX4ME Feb 28, 2002 12:31 PM

I have an '87 MAX with 355K. I'm the original owner and the engine has never been overhauled. :D

355,000 miles! HOLY SH*T!! If I continue to drive at my current pace of 15K miles/year and I can get 355K out of it, I'll be driving my good old '88 for another 17 years! By then it'll be 31 years old, a damn antique!

C,
Seeing as you'll be an antique at 31 and I'm 34 now, what does that make me? :)

My Maxima's Miles

I just bought my first Nissam Maxima yesturday. It has the straight six engine that I love. I've been driving a 280ZX for 5 years now, so I'm familar with these engines.

Well, I towed the car home and then drove it accross the street into my driveway. So I've only driven the car 50 feet but it already has 186,000 miles on it. Not too bad. my ZX has 195,000. Oh, and the Maxima is a 1984 auto. It needs some work though, inside and out.
:p

ratzman007 Mar 16, 2002 12:50 AM

my old 87 maxima has 200,000 miles on it, it blows oil out the exhaust, but doesnt smoke, just blows oil. this car has had the **** driven out of it. i mean it has been driven hard. transmission blew out on it at about 193,000 miles and it still runs and runs and runs, blowin its oil trail. i burn about a quart a week. not too shaby cause its still quick even though the compression on it feels like its 1/2 what it came with
