Aftermarket ignition coil code 21 ?
I just changed out the oem coil with a Standard/intermotor brand and I'm getting a code 21. The coil resistance measured in spec., but there are some physical differences - exposed painted core lamination. Maybe this causes a problem with the ground connection. Anyone have problems with aftermarket coils on 2nd gens?

Thinking this through a little more it could the ignition module causing the code 21. That is was failed the last time , even though this a pretty new replacement . I have to check it when the weather clears.
After researching I couldn't be sure of the quality of the cps when I replace it, so just got one from the parts store with a lifetime warranty. It was good bet since the BWD part looked like a rebox of another brand and not the original in the pic. Jeez, most replacement parts are going to crap - even the best brands. Half the job is researching the part quality and even then?

What brand coil and cps are you running? My coil is Standard uf 66 (rebox for beck arnley) and the cps is BWD p - version (can't remember the full pn). They used to both be good brands- but who knows . Standard owns both brands now.

I've always removed Nissan epoxy coils cause they suck! My D21 has MSD oil filled coils installed...Remember the coils you replace the stock with have to be electronic ignition compatible....If you installed a breaker point coil you will have problems....My 3rd gen has a huge Mallory oil filled coil and ignition box...it has to be compatible....also I made mine plug-N-play by using a plug off most Nissan's engine/transmission....that is the same as the epoxy Oem coil plug...

Turns out the code 21 is from is a bad icm. The new coil threw me since I installed it around the time the com problem started. Once I did a more detailed diag I found the bad icm. The real problem is two icm's I got under warranty were bad and completely died in less than a minute. They are OEM supplied parts w/OEM number. Sounds like a bad batch of parts .
