A/C Compressor clutch lock up
 

I have a 1988 Max the compressor clutch went. I lent the car to a friend the ac refrigerant was empty, he turned it on (apparently - not sure if he did or not didn't really ask) clutch engaged and it locked up. Now on these maximas generator is driven by a belt from the ac compressor. Is it possible to take out the compressor take apart the clutch somehow disengage it and leave it free spinning in order to feed the generator? The car is stuck at a friends house about and hour away from me and i want to bring it back home where i can fix it. I already bought all the new components for it. Such as compressor, evap core, expansion valve, heater dryer (accumulator). Also a question i'm still thinking about is should i fill it with R22 or R134a. r134 seems like the right choice but i couldn't find any info on the oil to use. Either PAG 46 / 100 / 150 or ester. Very little info on that. On the other hand for R22 i know exactly what oil and capacity goes inside. Any thoughts?

you can always do a bypass "shorter belt" and continue driving the car without the AC. I just recently did that and you will need a 37" belt, but please check in case is shorter on a 98 version. Good luck

Unfortunately it's not an option on the 88. The belts go from crank to ac compressor and from ac compressor to alternator. Also the generator is deeper into the engine than the compressor. So it can't be directly rotated. And i dont' have the car nearby to take pics.

After many many hours crawling through internet i found a file from http://www.johnsens.com/ called regulatory_lubricantguide4.pdf in it it says that Nissan compressors made by Hitachi MJS170 require PEG 46 oil (and that's the one i have). So that answered one of my questions. And after a good night sleep i realized that the ac clutch doesn't engage if its not turned on. I knew my compressor was empty i would not have turned it on but apparently my friend was not aware of the situation and turned the ac on. And it locked up. I have a new compressor which i can just slide in there put belts back on and I'm good to bring my baby back home :). So thanks all for support I've figured it out.

Got the car back home. Took the compressor out. It's a Diesel kiki model is barely visible i think it says DKS-16H but last 3 digits is a guess. Also searched for these compressors on the net and couldn't find any for sale. They are all different. Stuck again...

Alright another day spent taking everything apart. Don't know if this info will ever be needed for anyone but i've come across a wonderful site which has tons of info on compressors. http://www.compressor-intl.com/HTML/NIS88.htm accoring to here PAG 46 is the oil. But again i can't find any suppliers.
