I had a bad vibration in my SE today, took it to the alignment shop to have what I thought was a wheel balance. Turns out my drivers side bearings are shot, and the vibration was caused by that wheel havin 3 inches of play over the shot bearings. Bottom line: there goes another $400. I'm starting to wish I'd never bought the damn thing.

cars with age and use, require some maintenance and new parts. It sucks but in the end worth every penny if the car is really worth it!!!!!

Not trying to be a ****, and it sucks about having to fork over money to get it fixed, but how do you let a bearing go long enough to wear it 3 inches and not notice it?

Not to bust your chops or anything..but you shouldn't complain. Paying $400 to replace one bearing is simply not smart. You could have gotten it replaced alot cheaper elsewhere. If you were handy enough, you could have took out the whole spindle and have a shop simply press out the old and press in the new bearing which would end up costing about $100 or less including the new bearing. $400 can be justified if you needed a new hub or if both sides bearings were replaced otherwise..in my personal opinion, I feel you took a severe raping.

Anyone that has an "older" car thats out of warranty should strongly consider getting warranty coverage. I use Warranty Direct for my warranty services. It just makes sense since a lot of stuff starts to go past a certain mileage/years of use.

I agree $400 is way to much. I payed somewhere around $30-$40 for the bearing and did the work myself and paid $20 to have the old one pressed out so all in all i only paid about $60 and did the work myself which is VERY easy to do!

Warranydirect doesn't let you get a warranty with a vehicle with more than 60,000 miles on it. And this being the 3rd gen forum, I'm gonna have to say not that many 3rd gen's have under that many miles.

OK, I did not let it wear that far. I just bought the car. I looked at the paper again and they are indeed replacing the entire hub and all of that crap. You may call me stupid but I always do my own work on everything but the damn driveline. I learned my lesson a few times and now it's just not worth it to me. I neglected to mention what all is being done for that money, and I feel it's worth at least most of the cost.

They're removing all the locking lug nuts which I don't have a key for, replacing the stripped studs because some of the wheels only have 3 lugs holding them on, replacing the bearing and all of that stuff, and both CV boots.

Even so, I know it's still more than I would pay if I did it myself but I want it done right, and I hate the driveline.

in that case, that's a good price....

otherwise, I would have said to buy an entire spindle from a junkyard for $50 and swap the thing out. takes 20 minutes. :)

for real, Matt loves the junkyard. I guess the only thing stock on his car is the carpet because his whole car is replaced by junkyard parts, but the exception for the carpet is because they're too dirty for him...just kidding :p
