Basically what it says. What Generation Maxima's 5spd's will work on ours, jut 3rd gen or more gens.???? My tranny is dying and I am going to myabe pick up a 5spd and convert it but I need to know if I have to get a 89 Max 5spd tranny or can I go with different years???

the 3rd gen 89-91 should be it...not sure about 92-94 (VE motors)

Probably just the 3-gens. As in 1995, Nissan went to the VQ all aluminium engine. And I know for sure that the starter is in a different place. I would assume the bellhousing probably has a different bolt pattern.

Kaleb put a 3-gen VE tranny in his VG. I always suspected that would be a bolt up thing.

So the VE would work as well.......

The Canadian VQ 5-speed w/ LSD and the I30t 5-speed with LSD are the same as the VE LSD 5-speed, so that should work as well....

should. :)

Are you saying that the Canadian 5-sps are different than the USA 5-sps?(lsd aside)

I just posted this in another thread a couple days back ("manual swap question").

The manual tranny model RS5F50A was used in 85-91 max's, 87+ stanza's, and 4x2 axxess's. Not sure about the bellhousings, but Nismo87 said that 2nd genners had swapped 3rd gen tranny's into their cars. Sounds good enough to me.

Here's tranny application chart for future reference:

RSF30/31-5 81-94 Sentra, Pulsar, Stanza
RS5F50A 85-UP Maxima, 87-UP Stanza, Axxess 4x2 5 Speed
RS5F504X4 86-90 Stanza, Axxess 4x4 5 Speed
RS5F30/31 4X4 87-90 Sentra 4x4 5 Speed
RN4F30/31-4 91-94 Sentra 4 Speed
RS5F50A/LO 90-UP Maxima/Stanza 4x2 5 speed

Not sure on that. All I know for 100% is that the 5-speed LSD trans are the same in 3rd and 4th gen Maximas.

Jeff92se Mar 19, 2003 10:04 AM

Hmm all the 4-gens I see have the starter at 12 O'clock. All the 3-gens have them at 9 o'clock. I think the VE auto and 4-gen autos are the same though(starter at 12 o'clock). Hmmm... interesting.

LSD for a tranny?

I've seen what LSD does to people, does it do the same thing to a tranny??

 seriously, what does the tranny version of LSD stand for?
