Tach jumps around, then works, then doesn't
Since having installed a new CV axle on the drivers side, the tach has started doing some crazy things. First, it does not work at all, then the needle will jump back and forth. It will peg out at over 8K rpm and then it may work for an hour and then stop. Has anyone experienced anything like this? What was the fix???

Re: Tach jumps around, then works, then doesn't
I had the same tachometer problem on my 81 Datsun 310. I washed my engine and it started working normally then stopped. A look at the wiring diagram shows it is not a physical thing, it is electrical. A wire runs from the ignition coil through a resister to the tachometer.(actually there are a total of 3 wire) The connection to resistor was dirty and corroded. (the wire was yellow with black strip) I spend some time cleaning dirt and corrosion out of connection and the tachometer starting working normally. I sprayed connection with WD-40 and picked out dirt with ice pick.
