30 mile drive and stalling...!!!

This is really strange but it happens to remind to me that I am having a old car.. (may be it needs attention )

I have a 93 Maxima SE. Yesterday the weather was good here 67 degree.. so I went on long drive of course not to long 25-20 miles..

Luckily I was out of the free way when this thing happened.. I am on the exit and just about to get in to main road.. right there maxima struggled... the rpm went below 500 and almost stalled.. then I put car in to park and restarted again to find the same thing..
though I press the gas hard the rpm just under 600.. and it is vibrating real hard rpm jumping up and down 0- 1000 RPM.. (it is like ashthama patient...)
then tried 4-5 times. same thing happens
I thought that is it.. then it moved at last.. I was scared and parked close by on parking lot then waited for 45 minutes and then tried again.. No problems till I reached home
other wise no major problems so far... it is work horse i love it

This kind of thing happened last summer 3- 4 times. I see a pattern.. sunny warm days long drives (15-20 miles).. U have it right there baby.. my maxima gives up.. Then I shut off engine for a while
(30 minutes) and try again...it runs as if nothing happened

It hasn't happened even once in winter or fall...

I am pretty certain that it is some thing to do with temperature.. also any other day when I just start the enigne and on drive it idles at 750 RPM and after it warms up it drops to 600-550 RPM at idle...

I replaced lot of things.. pcv valve,air/fuel filter, pump, spark plugs
cleaned TB and IACV valve...
mine is 93 maxima SE with just 72K miles..

Some one please help before I get stranded middle of road this summer...

Let me know how I can go about fixing this problem? Is it the coolant temperature sensor? ( I have FSM..it is not much use in this case)

Thanks

sounds like your coil is going bad. My Z used to do that.

The same thing happens to my 94SE. The only difference is that weather is not a factor. If I'm sitting at a stop light or even a stop sign, the rpm drops suddenly. If I tap the gas, nothing happens for a sec and then it jolts forward.

I think this is related, for me at least, to some other problems. My car jumps into second gear and reverse. Also, my car doesn't start right away either. I have to give it a little gas before it kicks in. All of this is causing my spark plugs to wear down wicked fast. Mighty Max isn't looking so mighty for me anymore...

hey mightymax...
Did you try checking things out yourself related to this porblem..?
or you go to dealer or other repair center..?

So far I am lucky to have this thing happen 3 times on last summer.. I don't know about how things will go this time.. Surprisingly if I leave engine to cool off for 30 minutes then it is normal

Any one else having similar problem...?

I had the exact same problem with my 91 maxima and it turns out the issue was the MAF. I was able to purchase a refurbished one from Wal-Mart (of all places) considerably cheaper than a new one at the dealer.

Wal-Mart $99
Dealer $450

Good Luck

I'll have to raise it:

Nice try, but WalMart doesn't sell them for ANY car...much less an item that is more car specific than a spark plug.

Re: 30 mile drive and stalling...!!!

My grandmother (of all people) has had the same problem. for her, the computer switch was set from run to halfway between check and run. this disallowed the check engine light to come on. but, one of the coils in her 95 car (there are 6) was bad. so, running on 1 cylinder was making it stall as well as "bucking" at an intersection. i drove the car and it seems like the problem you are having.

I guess, I forgot to mention that this product is sold in Canada based Wal-Marts. Hope that helps. Perhaps the US doesn't stock it. oh well.

Could be one or more of your ignition coils are going bad. Or it might be Mass Air Flow sensor. Get a engine diagnostic ($80) before you spend a ton of money on Maybes. Good luck
