on the back or the side there's 4 screws..there are security torx bit. need to get the bit to loosen them.
off they go and the air bag comes out. then unbolt the center and pull wheel off.

After looking at my FSM, I have a few questions too...

This bit is the one that looks like a star, with a dimple in the center, correct? Do you know the size, or if you can get them at a local harware store/Home Depot? Do you know if once the airbag is off, one could mount any Nissan steering wheel in its place?

Sorry for the 20 questions :)

Yes you can buy them at the local home depot and stuff. They are called torx screws. I don't know the size but you should just buy a set they come in handy when working on cars.

Sorry, but I have to say it... Why don't you want to remove the passenger side wheel? I mean, if I was driving, there is no way I'd want my passenger to be able to jerk the car around on me... Especially if my mother is riding with me!
:fro:
OMG... I can't believe I just joined the ranks of the PW'ers...
Wait, it may not be as bad as I first thought... (On to the constructive part of the post)
PLEASE make sure you DISABLE THE AIRBAG FIRST... <cough> Not that I've ever forgotten or anything <cough>

I have the same question as posted above...can any year maxima wheel fit in its place...and will the airbag out of our 3rd gen wheel fit in the new wheel?

I can tell you that the only wheels that the airbag will fit are the same style steering wheel it came out of (92-94 Maxima, some altimas, etc). It is the whole center portion of the steering wheel, as you can see right here:

I am not sure if the actual mounting of the wheel is different due to the bag, or if once the bag is off everything is the same as a non-airbag wheel. I suspect it would be the same, but the pictures in my FSM are unclear.

Jeff (or anyone else)- have you had luck finding the bit required to take off the airbag? I believe it is a T-50 security torx bit, but neither the local Autozone or Sears sells them. Im sure that these are available somewhere, just not sure where to look next.
