My car has a rattle around the harmonic balancer. I mistook it for rod knock. I don't know a lot about but it has something to do with the balance of the crankshaft, if you think you have a problem with yours, better get it fixed.

Harmonic balancers are used on large v8s and other large, high power engines to reduce internal vibrations (from the crankshaft and pistons and such).. It will make the engine run smoother and keep itself from ripping itself to pieces with vibrations.

Our Maximas DO NOT have harmonic balancers/dampers. we have a large, heavy crank pulley. it's large and heavy because the end of our crank is a small diameter, and it take lots of material to make it the final diameter needed for our belt drive systems. they stuck rubber in it because it's much less dense than steel, thus making it weigh quite a bit less. I still weighs quite a bit (almost 9lb) compared to unorthodox's pulley (about 1.5lb if I recall correctly).

These engines run extremely smooth, and do not need a harmonic balancer.the only reason you see a difference in the engine with the unorthodox pulley is because of the drop in rotating mass that the engine has to accelerate when you stab the gas pedal.
