225's on 7" ok on 3rd gen

225's tires on 7" wide rims, need spacer or it's good to go in the front.

what's the offset of the rim?
usually on the front it's not a problem, but the rear is where the clearance issue is on our cars.

It wasn't good for me... 40mm, 1.8" drop

It's not the drop that matters in this case since the issue is clearance with the strut. You could raise or lower the MAX 3" and the clearance from the strut to the tire won't change.

In any case, with a spacer and some rolling you can get them to fit properly if there is any issues.

Thanks alot guys,
42mm offset.
225/50R16 front
215/55R16 rear
Currently 215 all around

Hmm, I have no wheels (aftermarket, silly! :p) to speak of, but from what I understand I think you may be cutting it a bit close with the wider tires in the front. Especially since your offset is a tad high and the wheels are 7" wide (which balloons out the tire a bit more). This is just what I figure based on stuff I've read about fitting 4th Gen wheels....

Have anyone tried 225 on 7" wheels in the front
thanks,

i dun see why its a problem tho. I'm running 225 all around with 17" Verdict 7" wider.

That is too skinny.

I run 17x8 35 offset 5 Zigen with 235/40/17 on slammed Intrax with no problem what so ever.

so i'm good to go thanks guys,

Again, you guys are comparing 3rd gens to 4th gens. COMPLETELY different suspension. The 4th gen has a problem with clearance on the front, but the 3rd have clearance on the rear.

as for what will actually fit IN the wheel wells, the widest you can fit in the back is a 235/45/17 without rubbing. any wider and you will have to roll the fenders.
currently, there's less than 1/4" between my strut and the tire and the tire/fender. any closer and you risk rubbing and cutting a tire against sheet metal on hard corners.
If you want to roll your rear fenders, then you can get a 245- MAYBE a 255 under there, but I don't know if I'd go that far unless you really needed the traction.

(99% of the cars here don't need it. the other 1% should be running 315 widths....)

You really want to stick to a wheel with an offset closer to 35mm.

I agree.

Just to clarify my previous post, I base what I say from what I know of people fitting 4th Gen wheels ON 3rd Gen cars...

I had typed up a long analysis here and some guesswork that it would come close to the limit of what fits or not, but then I just plugged some numbers into a handy tire combo calculator instead. :D

According to the calculator it's going to be very close, but I don't think the calculator takes into account how wheel width affects tire section width.... It said your idea is going to be just right at same inboard width as the biggest combo known to fit, so it should theroetically fit, but keep in mind this is just a calculator.

right. that is true. you can get away with 30-40mm, but really, ideally, 35 is the sweet spot.

for the record, GTR 16X8's with 225-50s fit perfectly on the car with 1.5" drop.

Bman Dec 18, 2003 06:59 PM

I'm pretty sure +30-35mm is the "sweet spot" if you want to fit the 235's. I have done tons of research on this issue and everything points to this being the case. It can get pretty crazy when you do the math and a couple millimeters here or there can make or break the deal.
