Help! Can't Put In Reverse!

Help... the car was running fine the day earlier and out of no where... it won't go into reverse anymore! Has anyone else have this problem with their car?? It's a 91' Maxima (Manual).

At first I was gonna say it's your shifter interlock until you said manual... How's your clutch fluid looking?

open the door, put your foot down and move the car alittle, does that work?

aznprid972 Dec 30, 2003 02:37 PM

I don't know about the clutch fluid... bought the car used.. might be. As for moving the car in neutral... it still moves. The gears work but no reverse.

so it was working before?

hmmm, I'd check/flush the clutch line fluid, and also the tranny. (maybe pay attention to the tranny fluid for metal parts/shavings)

We're you driving the hell out of it?

hahaha... not me.. my older bro. he touched it last. im hoping the problem will be something easy to fix like changing/flushing the clutch fluid. hope nothing is broken or anything. but this should be the problem?? or is it a maybe check this problem first type deal?

clutch fluid wont prevent you from outting it in reverse. now let me ask you this does the shifter physically go in reverse ? or you cant even get it that far ? if it physically goes in then youve got an internal problem (possibly syncros) if it dosent even go in it may be that something is bent underneeth the car, 2) something is jamming it 3) the metal sleeves in the tranny are worn and its getting caught hence a rebuild is necessary...

Helpful tip of the day: Make sure the car has stopped moving before you put it in reverse. :)

Check the overall function of the clutch hydaulics. Try going into a forward gear then into rev. Mine is a little fussy getting into reverse too. Usually takes one or two tries. You should never put it into reverse while moving in any direction. Reverse has no synchro, so it could not be that. If it won't go into the "gate", you might want to check out the shift levers and the little gear selector input shaft thingy at the back of the trans under the little boot for damage/binding. Thay can get smacked and bent if you blast over something a little too tall. If it goes in but the car does not move, the prob is obviously internal. The reverse mechanism has a few smallish parts that can fail and would render it useless. Good luck.
