Throttle body cleaning (extended)

Just read Craig Brace's excelent article about how to clean the throttle body on a VG30 Engine. He go's through a lot of trouble to get to the throttle body but doesn't take it off the intake to clean it. It seems a more effective job could be done by cleaning it on a bench. You might even get some crud out of the intake as well. Does anyone know a good reason not to take the butterfly plate assembly off for cleaning? Is it a PITA to remove? It's assumed that new gaskets for the inboard and outboard sides of the assembly will be required. Thoughts?

I'm interested if this would yield a better result (then again, doing something is better than nothing) as well. So...

you can clean it better on a bench than you can with it on the car.

you can take the butterfly plates out, but just be careful taking them out and putting them back in. Some require alittle force, others glide right in.

also use brake cleaner... it works great for cleaning buildup.
