ticking under acceleration?? valves? vtc's? HELP?
 

This is the scenario.
When accelerating (i.e giving throttle and underload) it sounds like the old popular VTC ticking. For the record i grounded my VTC's about 1yr ago. And this same sound is heard during start-up.
Is it likely that my VTC spring assembly is getting worse. This is my guess, but i thought the VTC's were only in action at a certain RPM or oil pressure?!?!
FYI. 270,000km 5sp, 1994 SE oil changed regularly..

all ideas and suggestions gladly recommended because i dont want to blow my baby up.

is it only when the engine is cold?

usually VTC tick will completely dissappear under heavy throttle.. I can lug the engine at low speeds and get it to completely go away.

If it does it worst when it's cold, then goes away as it warms up, then it's most likely broken exhaust studs.

As the VTCs get worse, it will click when cold/warm/grounded/not grounded.

Matt - Warm/cold/hot.. it doesnt matter, this is what worry's me most...
Jeff - i was hoping it wouldnt be.. but i think your right.
But how come they are making this noise under acceleration ? and not just under pressure as they were designed too?
And if it is the VTC's.. could i wait until the warmer weather (march/april )
or will i cause serious damage otherwise??

When mine click, they will click when I accelerate. It's because the spring is weak. Accereration is non-related. You can probably wait but it's irritating!

May I ask what a VTC is? Because my Max does the same when I accelerate or put the car in gear.

doesn't affect the VG. like you've got

you can also try switching to a heaver weight oil and/or add some Restore to quiet them down, it works wonders. Mine are in such bad shape that they tick mainly when warmed up but not when cold, and under moderate acceleration they quiet down. But it sounds to me like your exhaust studs. could also be your timing chain tentioners or a number of other things.

Mine are the worst (ask MrGone)...I want to get them rebuilt, but that would cost too much for my wife to approve of, unless I could find someone local to cut me a good deal. hahaha

if it is your VTC's, I'd suggest running a motor flush at your next oil change (or now). Dont forget to use a new cheap filter + old oil + flush solution, when doing the flush.


Yeah, mine can tick when grounded/ungrounded if the want. But usually after driving and the vtc's have had a chance to turn on and off a few times, the chatter will go away. But the chatter will always go away when the engine is under a load (at least 2000rpm).

Hey jeff, do you think i would be taking a risk doing the knocksensor bypass with my car in this condition.
And have you tried the knocksensor bypass? to verify.. is the 450 ohm resistor just jumped across the two prongs on the vehicle harness going to sensor??

PLEASE don't touch the knock sensor bypass if you don't know what you're doing. 450ohms is the completely wrong value, and all it can do is make things worse if you screw it up.

I figure some poor college student could use some extra money and a little project to keep himself occupied for a couple of days... :lol:

i appreciate your concern.. what is the correct resistance than?
and i do have somewhat of an idea as to what im doing.. maybe not as much knowledge in the electrical department ..
I just want to see if my knocksensor is faulty, i will not keep the sensor bypassed, i just want to know if i need the sensor because i will be in that area of tha car, for my studs, and VTC issues.
