I'm sofa king we todd did

I'm trying to replace the timing belt on my 89 SE (VG30E) and it appears that there are no markings on the cam. cogs to line them up properly, can anyone tell me another way to line them up?........there was supposed to be a notch in the cog, and a notch on that upper timing cover, but they are not there? wtf?

Matt93SE Jan 20, 2004 07:08 PM

You didn't mark everything before you tore it apart? :rotz:

Maxima-4DSC Jan 20, 2004 07:14 PM

uh oh - gowirelessnj catastrophy part two

todamax Jan 20, 2004 07:31 PM

Look harder on each, they are there. The hardest to find will be the timing cover.

Also I didn't mark anything but the left and right cam sprocket when I took mine apart (valve job). The timing marks were there, and everything else was coming off... I had to re-time from scratch anyway.

the old belt broke off, so marking isn't much help.

Thanks

Fatty:
I'm certain the VG is an interference engine. Being so you have bent valves, unless you're a lucky man.
But I could be wrong.

ah man, looks like it's new engine time, that sux, I had 220,000 on her.

jim90gxe Jan 20, 2004 10:34 PM

I'd do a leak down test on her before I buy an engine. Who knows.
Good luck.

todamax Jan 21, 2004 05:56 AM

holy crap. broke while running is not good.

Pull the heads and check for bent valves before you do anything else, or just go buy a motor for it and save a bit o' time

whitymax Jan 21, 2004 07:04 AM

How long was it since you last replaced the time belt?

Matt93SE Jan 21, 2004 07:31 AM

you can generally pick up another VG for about $3-500 at must salvage yards.. do the timing belt job while you've got it out of the car and it's 100x easier. then put 'er in the car and you're up and running again.

Jeff92se Jan 21, 2004 10:31 AM

At 220,000, don't even bother with inspecting the engine. Just get another used one like Matt93se said.

ty all, I'm gonna go with a salvage engine and just use my old one as a parts engine.

broncoguy Jan 21, 2004 11:02 AM

Somebody on here is selling their old VG for like $200...I read it yesterday, but can't remember where. It wasn't on the for sale side, tho. part of another thread, I think... anyone??

icepick Jan 21, 2004 11:27 AM

on the new motor do port polish 4 angle valve job + j wolf cams

Jeff92se Jan 21, 2004 11:28 AM

Might as well go 6 angle and direct ignition

That is the only thing I regret from my top end rebuild. I tried to get cams from Motorsport, but they played around with the order so long that I eventually told them to stuff it. The thing is that the car pulls so hard now, I know it would have been better.

funny....you guys assume that I have money.....I wish I could get a new set of cams and have the heads ported, but wishes cost money, something I don't have. Thanks for the advice though.

lophix Jan 21, 2004 09:50 PM

oy..i guess that would be me!! unfortunately, i haven't heeded matt's advice and changed my location to :ahem: kansas it's not too far from dallas though :wall:

that's why I suggested buying another engine.... to fix the one you've got, it's going to cost nearly as much as repairing the one you've got.

if you snapped the timing belt while the engine is running, then there's about a 99% chance you bent a valve- or worse..

If you feel like it, put the new timing belt on the engine and crank it over.. see if you've got compression in all 6 cylinders. If so, then great. If not, then it's time to start shopping for an engine. junkyards and parts stores take credit cards, so you can at least put it on plastic and get it up and running.

KRMaxima21 Jan 21, 2004 11:31 PM

Picture snapping the timing belt at 1am on a major NY highway with no cell phone and 3 broke friends. Thank god for a father with a Cadillac Brougham and towing cables....lol.....sorry about the engine man. I picked up one here with 80K on it for 350 from a salvage yard. Been running good ever since....wish I would have went with a JDM though...

broncoguy Jan 22, 2004 06:36 AM

Hey Fatty- another thought is a junkyard down in Mansfield- Mazda-Nissan Heaven. They seem to have a lot of stuff, and they post on ebay every once in a while. Last time, their prices were really good.

OT: Sounds like there are quite a few of us in the Dallas area. Has there ever been a meet in the Dallas/North Texas area??

BWWAHAHAHAH!!! :newbie:

Ummm, Dallas area is where most of the old school .org members came from..

I've been to probably 20 dallas meets over the last 5 years.

broncoguy Jan 23, 2004 06:49 AM

OK, Matt.....I wasn't really sure what you meant there. Could you be a little more clear?? :)

Yes, I am a noob when it comes to meets....so where is everybody? Any meets planned in the near future?

Nothingstoofast Jan 23, 2004 06:56 AM

take it from me.... my timing belt snapped while running and it took all the valves and 2 pistons with it (bummer). new engine for me, oh yea baby 40k miles on this one
