Blew my timing belt... ARRGH!!

Hey guys, I need some input here. Yesterday my timing belt blew on my 92 GXE I pulled the valve covers and spun the cams over to see it any of the valve stuck, and they all seemed to close normaly. At this point my hopes were up..
So I throw a new T-belt in and try to fire it up, nothing. Did a compression test and my # 1, 2, and 5 cylenders have no compression. I tore the belt off and reinstalled it thinking i might have had it off a tooth or 2, but that didnt help.
So now I'm at a loss here, I would think the valves would be bent if they hit hard enough to break a piston but I my be wrong.. Any thoughts on that theroy?
Also who has the best prices on pistons and valves? If I didnt trash the heads or block I'm gonna try to repair it but I haven't torn into it that far yet, kinda afraid of what I'm gonna find... Thanks for any help / advice!

ouch if the timing belt blew you may as well kiss that motor goodbye, most likely the valves bent. repair would be close to the cost of a new motor

No compression can be from the valve not sealing properly. You DID damage the valves, and POSSIBLY the pistons beyone repair. I've seen bent valves (or pieces) score cylinder walls. There is NO room for error on these engines. I would look for a new motor.

I am soooooo going to kick Dain in the nutz. Why does he check the "Keep me logged in" box on my fuggin computer?!??!?!?!?! ARGGH

www.car-part.com

buy another engine from them. at minimum swap the heads from it. it will be cheaper and easier than rebuilding the head you have and replacing the dead valves, guides, etc etc.

Well I guess I'm gonna tear into it this weekend and see how bad it is. Found a couple of motors locally for $400-600 all over 100k. Just out of curiosity, what would a brand new engine set me back? I dont even know where to begin searchin for one either..

Matt93SE 02-26-2004 08:28 PM

couple thousand for a new one.. but you won't find a new one.
rebuilt/remanufactured maybe..

just buy a junkyard one, have the heads rebuilt, new timing belt and seals and you're ready to go. the bottom end of these engines last forever.

Thanks for the input. Guess I'll make some calls to the boneyard tomorrow. I wonder if I can haul a used engine home in the back of my CRX LOL!!

previous user never keep service record, how do I know whether he changed timing belt according schedule! What if he didn't replace the timing belt? Am I screwed on this?

Psychosis 02-26-2004 08:41 PM

Well if in doubt change it, at least then you know. The belt itself is under $20 if you do it yourself...
Far cheaper than the alterantive as I just found out.

always change the timing belt when you get the car unless you know for sure that it was done within the last 40k
just look for a JDM motor to drop in, they're only a bit more money but less mileage

by any chance what jdm motors are there for this gen and how much. sry it might be posted somewhere. I just never thought about a swap before on mine. I might consider it soon just to have another motor layin around the house. :)

Got any links to importers?

internetautomar 02-27-2004 08:37 AM

the VG30E motor was used in one form or another from 6/84 - until 98 I think
it was also used in the nissan quest/ Mercury Villager.
Don't have any links off the top of my head to JDM places mostly cause there are a couple in my area already
