Here we go: JDM VE Swap getting underway.

Engine came today. Here's pix:

http://ghettomods.net/gallery/JDM

It's got a good bit of transit damage on the outside parts.

I have no doubts however that this is a JDM engine. The oil filter label is completely japanese, and the Cam Position Sensor casing is metal (USDM is plastic) - plus it's sealed with a piece of reflective tape with japanese writing on it.

Pulled plugs and they are originals, and look fine, so I think I can assume this is a low mileage engine.

Exhaust studs are all intact.

Internals are silvery, not glistening bright and shiny, but not tarnished at all. Water pump needs to be replaced and some of the coils are already cracking.

There's a label on the side of the engine with a date of 1/2002 so I think it may have been sitting for quite a while.

The throttle plate was even sealed shut with carbon.

So far, so good. I'm not worried about the externals as much as the internals.

oh, and:

I swear upon all that is holy that if I hear VTC noise I will **** A BRICK IN RAGE!

Why get JDM?

Maximas are scarce around here and the JDM low mileage VE with a 6 month unlimited mileage warranty is cheaper than a 100K plus junkyard engine only guaranteed as far as you can throw it... and TRUST ME you aren't throwing this **** ANYWHERE.

try to find a low mileage VE motor in a junkyard.

ps. youll love the power you get and the feeling of evereything being tight and new once your done.

I have a bunch of spare parts if needed. I also have a lightened stock flywheel that weighs out at about 16lbs. vs 19-20lbs stock vs 11-12lbs for the Fidanza. Shouldn't even need to be resurfaced either.

I was always under the impression that the vent tube would crack if you used it for a hoisting spot, atleast it didn't.

Other VE info tidbits: it takes a 40 foot steel flatbed trailer @ ~10mph to crack a 2" chunk out of the rear valve cover (and push the complete engine ~10feet... my friend didn't see the engine, lol). The same cracked valve cover can be ran over by a Durango or Surburban with out a problem, heck it even stood up to a dually with 5000lbs in the bed (well box).

When I first grounded my VTC's my idle was crappy and changed my IACV with my spare (from an auto), I actually forgot about that. My car idles like all the other VE 5spd's I've been in, and it IACV did have a bigger opening (I didn't bother closing it). (edit: well I mean my idle's perfect when my VTC's aren't grounded, when they are grounded my idle is crappy, but not crappy in a good way )

Okay; 4/5 update:

Wrestled the SOB into a truck with a cherry picker and hauled it over to the house. It took us forever to figure out what to hoist with because of the chain assortment we had. Finally we just but the big chain on the *ahem* breather tube. but unlike the previous person we attached smaller chains under the exhaust manifolds taking load off.

When we got it back home we just drug it to the end of the bed and rolled up the engine stand. Luckily the truck was the right height and we bolted the stand up, let some air out of the tires and rolled it away.

Pics are forthcoming tonight when I start taking stuff out.

Note to anyone planning this themselves: If you think you're gonna wrestle a fully assembled VE around with less than 3 people or a BIG cherry picker, think again.

This one was about $1100 shipped to a business address. I could have gone cheaper, but the other places only had 3 month warranties.

You are correct. This is an A/T engine, the starter tooth ring is different, and the intake plenum is different. I plan on swapping mine over with power valve etc...

The wire harness is part of the car, not the engine, so I should be fine there. I have all the connectors needed for a 5-Speed. As for the other stuff, thats why I have a spare engine

hehe I still haven't fixed the datalogger jeff

This is cleaning me out pretty quick. I wasn't expecting the exhaust studs to be 68 bucks and I wasn't expecting to have to buy an engine stand etc.... Maybe let me know what you want for the lightened flywheel if you can get it here by friday.

Thanks chris. I plan on using my original one for this. I can't really think of any parts I may need, except motor mounts. PM me with whatcha got and I may grab some of it

That sounds reasonable to me, except that the software for the interface doesn't log unless you buy the tuner version for ~100 bucks. The free version only does realtime display of current conditions.

Also, if that were reasonable, I'd still like to have a monetary value in case I can't figure out the logger circuit..

Real time might be okay also. You just want me to send it so you wil have it by Fri? Time seems to be a bigger issue here. $-wise I spend $160 getting it lightened. You probably could have it done cheaper. No one else that I knew of at the time has had it done. Plus you will save $30-$50 on the resurface since it's only like 2 weeks on this resurface. I guess my $ price would be about $80 shipped.

Here's an update:

Pulled the Exhaust Manifolds to replace the studs last night. The studs were already the upgraded ones and all were intact.

There were some disgusting growths inside the coolant passages and water pump. Pics: http://ghettomods.net/gallery/4-7-04

Also, my ASP UDP arrived today and I'll toss that on tonight. Pics: http://ghettomods.net/gallery/UDP

Engine looks really clean

Um you might want to hold off on the udp. It doesn't look like that one as the steel sleeve to protect from grooving the aluminum pulley(and start a leak). RPM outlet should have given you an updated version. Unless the sleeve is also painted blue?

So Shawn and Anton are coming down this weekend to help?

Oh goody, maybe someone will finally complete one of these projects. Let us know when it is finished, heck, let us know if you ever start this project because no one that I know of has ever even started it. It would be awesome to see a clean finished product but if you read previous posts, you will see that its been talked about alot and I don't recall ever seeing it finished. I think you'de be better off buying a Z.

I was planning on tuning my Carb this weekend but one of these days I'm going to have to go to portland (unless the guy comes up) because I've got some E7TE Heads (well full engine but I only want the heads) waiting for me.

Keelan, I dont think I took any pictures of Jeff's UDP when we took it off, but it did have the ridge or whatever. I dont think you can Anodize steel, but I'm not sure.

Thats a clean motor woooweeee I betcha your one happy camper!
The one thing I can't figure out is why is there so much carbon in the intake, thats worse than my 165k motor

Guys, can we talk about impractical swaps in another thread? Geez, where's the diagram of the different engines and why they won't fit when you need it?

This UDP looks like its missing a steel sleeve. What do I have to do to get it replaced? They didnt even send me the right color. I ordered red!

I dunno what shawn's doing. It would be really great if he helped but I don't want to push it.

Shawn: If you do come help I've actually got a cherry picker this time

That black goo was actually oil. We tipped the engine upside down on accident while on the stand. I think it just leaked out of the PCV, but I'll investigate more.

I am WAY happy though. I couldn't belive there were no wear marks on the rockers or the timing chain.

I got the engine from 'Jeff's Import Engines' and it was $1100 shipped to my work address.

So far the internals look clean, but I'm really worried about the VTC's. I heard them clicking already when I was rotating the crank by hand.

I REALLY hope it's just because there's no oil pressure in the engine right now.
