Loosening crankshaft pulley bolt
 

First of all - my question is related to the auto.
I know there are at least three ways to do this operation.
1. Use strap wrench or chain wrench to hold the pulley while trying to loose the bolt.
I heard that this method mostly doesn't work.
2. "Crank" method - have a wrench tied to suspesion and crank starter.
I remeber discussions on the forum that this method is dangerous.
3. Have the pulley jammed somehow and then do the job.
I don't know how to jam it.

So please could anybody share their experiense about this task.

Any advice is really appreciated.

Pull off the starter and wedge a bigarse screwdriver in the gears on the flex plate.. have someone hold that in place while you crank on the pulley bolt.


the easy way to do it is to take it to a tire shop and have them use air tools to break it loose, then only tighten it to 50-60 lb and go straight home. do what you gotta do, then make sure you tighten it to spec when you finish.

Regarding your first recommendation, I hope I'll fugure what exactly you mean if I pull off the starter.

Regarding tire shop: are you saying that when air tools are used then there is no need to hold the pulley because of the high torque generated by the air tool?

Air tools are the way to go. I tried wedging things against the back, and ended up bending some wrenches. I finally broke down and got the proper air tools...they made it a cinch.
