VE Transmission Q's
Well, my tranny finally went kaput. Just before I had a chance to put in my new B&M cooler. Well, now I have two options. The dealer in my home town wants to sell me a auto transmission (brand new, not a rebuild) for $1600. Also, I found a yard that wants to sell me the transmission from a 92 SE for $300. They'll let me take anything I need for the swap plus the tranny for $400. I would need a new flywheel & clutch. What should I do?
Here's my questions... (1) The car that the used 5sp was in is a gold 92 se but it has black door moldings (the horizontal strip between the bottom of the door and the handle, shaped like this < ). Was this a special model offered that year? All maximas I've seen have body colored ones (2) The engine was already seperated from the car so the tranny is chillin by itself. How can I identify it to make sure its correct? (3) I have VLSD on my auto. Does the manual car have to be the same. Or can I just use my axles? (4) I have read what posts and info i could on the swap. Here is a list of what I understand I need for the swap. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Transmission Transmission/motor mounts Clutch Pressure plate T/O bearing Fly wheel Master cylinder Slave cylinder Hydraulic Lines 5sp break pedal 5sp clutch pedal Shift linkage Shifter Shifter boot Starter? Transmission seals Gear oil This is all I could think of for now. Is there anything else I should know before I go thru with it? Thanx in advance |
You wouldn't need the break pedal. Just cut the old one, and put the pad back on. You will need a pilot bearing.
You can use your axles, just make sure the CV boots are good. No sense installing bad parts. If it was a '92-'94 SE the tranny will work. You will have to do a few wiring things, but its not hard. Or you could buy my auto that I just took out of my '92SE that has just shy of 67K on it. :D |
Thanx for the reply.
I have a few more Q's. My tranny wouldn't allow my car to move in reverse in R or N. Could this be the e-brake sticking? Or, are the clutches not engaging the gears? Also, are there anyparts I should buy new in the process. I am planning on buying a medium duty clutch, aluminum flywheel, and a STS from custom maxima. Anything in addition to this? Who makes a good clutch? I hear there are some companies to stay away from. Thanx again |
Manual and Automatics use different axles.

heh, actually they don't. I just did this. I compared them before the instell. Not different. They are in. Auto axles in the manual tranny. |
there is a technical difference between, that doesn't preclude them from being interchanged though, in this case.
