viscosity oil for ticking VTC's

I've read the threads on Maxima VTC ticking. I own a 92 SE just starting to have this problem. I've gotten the Toyota filter, but still have ticking. What oil viscosity would be better for this problem (more specificly to fix it, thinner oil, say 10W-30 to pump up to the top faster or the other end of the spectrum, 20W -50 to increase pressure at the top? Should I use synthetic or standard oil?

Thanks, 92 Max

don' matta -- you're doomed.

seriously, in my experience, it didn't matter. you just have to change the oil very often (like every 1000 miles if needed) and also i'd recommend putting in CD2. seemed to help out. get the "quiets valves" kind in the yellow bottle.

also, you might check the lubricants forum for more discussions.

hmm mine seemed to get better after i first changed my oil...

i switched to semi-synth, which in my opinion would be the best choice for our cars...
i chose castrol magnatec for the extra sticky gimmickyness :P
seems to go nicely though.

I did an oil change on my VE the other month or so, since it had been awhile since my last and the VTC's were starting to make a noise. I did notice something funny tho as for the last 6 odd months I had them grounded, like the fact that my car wouldn't idle quite right when it was cold or I had the lights on. Would stall just after starting some times also.

So while I was doing the oil change I check the vtc soleniod in the front bank of my engine, it was a little gunky so I soaked it in petrol for a while blew it out with a air gun and chunked in back in. Installed the filter put in the oil and started it up, I still had the vtc's grounded then un grounded them then grounded them a couple of times. I have heard any noise from them in about 2 months now. Which is all good. Put in semi-synth cant remember what weight it was 10-40, 15-40 or something along those lines. I left the enginge to drain for like 2 odd days (Over kill). I had done a flush on my previous oil change like last year.

I did a few other maintance things at the same time changed the tensioner pully bearings and a main-bearing bush plus some drive line stuff.

Hope this helps.
