Yea, 240's are sweet too. I was gonna look for one if I didn't find the Z. It's all about the RWD baby! I'm not gonna do a lot of mods right away to the engine since she has high miles. I'll start building a new motor soon tho. I got her for $3800 cash, mint shape, one owner, but high miles. (200,000)

Maxima-4DSC Jun 26, 2004 03:44 PM

hey is the z32tt motor timing chain driven or timing belt driven ? chain i hope....(vg30dett)

z32 n/a and tt are both timing belt (single), but changing it is a lot easier than the timing chains on the vg30 max engine

240sx. S13 or S14. As soon as I get some extra cash, I'm going to try to pick one up as a project car.

mtcookson Jun 26, 2004 11:39 PM

if you get an S14 skip psat the oogly 95-96's and get a the "evil" S14 with the slanted headlights. those things look soooooooooooo oooooo oooo badass

Hi MaxHeadroom,

the vg30 on the max is a timing belt not timing chain,

the vg30dett is almost the same as the vg30e engine,

the timing chain was on the ve30de,

and that was the 92-94 se engine not the vg engine,

i wish i could afford a 300zxtt

first off the vg30e is a belt not a chain, an di nkow the ve is a chain cause i own one. Im looking into a 95 300zx TT 5speed black on black 89K and i was wondering if its chain or belt. if its belt im passing and getting a 2003 max 6speed....

internetautomar Jun 27, 2004 04:26 PM

300ZX = Timing belt :thumbsdown:

mtcookson Jun 27, 2004 04:42 PM

timing belts aren't bad. the only downside to them is you have to change them every 60k miles which is usually quite a few years. most of nissan's high performance engines use a belt (rb, vg-t and tt, etc).

jwmaxse Jun 27, 2004 04:49 PM

I don't think I would pass up a 300zxtt just because it has a timing belt. It has MUCH more potential than the '03 maxima.

internetautomar Jun 27, 2004 05:26 PM

They used timing belts because they don't transmit vibration like a chain does, and they are lighter.

I wouldn't pass up a free car with a timing belt, but I wouldn't buy one at a normal price either (with an interference motor)

GReDdyXMaXiMa Jun 28, 2004 05:37 AM

Nice car , I am selling my maroon too :-D

Maxima-4DSC Jun 28, 2004 03:46 PM

well ill have to think about it i really dont want any belt motor. maybe ill just invest in the 2003 6speed max and get a nice turbo setup for it. I found a nice titanium edition speed SE......humm descitions descitions...not to worry my bro wants to buy the VE 5speed, so it will stay in the family. I hate to part with her but i need more power and a newer car with less miles.....mmmnew car smell..........LOL

daily_max Jul 2, 2004 10:22 PM

a little advice for u.....
dont sell it! keep the maxima and have both. the maxima is for bringing family/friends around, long drives/travel, shopping, ect. and lets not 4get the main reasion> winter driveing, that ZX is going to have alot of trouble, its worse then my camaro in snow. when i first got my Z i drove it all year round and i feared snow lol i could only drive when the roads were plowed/dry, if it was going to snow i couldnt go far, if it starts snowing alot i would have to head home, and if it snows during the night that means im takeing the bus to school/work, trust me u will fear the snow to lol. trust me u will mod it 4 sure and once u put alot into her and have it lookin perfect u will hate the fact u use it as a daily. But the main reasion sports cars suck for daily drivers though is because the space, they are just to small inside for every day use (oh and yours is one of the worst too) anyway i hope this helps u out, i wanted to let u know in advance because i went through it all>thats y i have the maxima.
Anyway u made the right choice for a sports car/racer/show they have alot of potential. i luv that style ZX they look sooo nice! they were on the top of my list when i was lookin to by a spots car/racer (had to be TT though) but i decided to go with a muscel car. i have had my Z for 3 years and i put alot of work/money into her and there was just no way i could use it as a daily, it would just be wrong lol.
check it out if u want, i have pics of my daily maxima on pg 7 also.
http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/450475

good luck man! let me know if u get pic online so i can check her out.
later

mtcookson Jul 2, 2004 11:20 PM

That's what I did myself. I bought the older Z for a low enough price that I could keep my Maxima. The Z will most likely be my daily driver except for bad weather days. I'm planning on putting in the VH45DE from the Q45. 310 hp and 330 ft. lbs. of raw, tire burning, chassis twisting power. Ok, so maybe it won't be that bad with the stock engine setup but when I get the turbo put on there.... heheheh :D

listen to him^^^.

i got an S14 (the "oogly" zenki model --hehehe -- the one that looks *better* than the slant-eyed one? you know that one?)... and there ain't no way in he$L i'd use that as a daily driver. for one, it is too impractical. two, i'm cherrying it out. so any slight knick in the paint is like mental cruelty to me. so i have the maxima. if it gets a knick or scratch, who cares. someday, i'll fix them all in one go when i retire her.

by the way, that Z is very sweet. i prefer the Z32/300ZX era to the new Z33/350Z. i think the model you have is the "peak" of the Z car design, IMO. although, the new Zs are growing on me bit by bit.

keep your maxima. if not only for practicality. 2-seater-esque sports cars are toys. and believe me, you will not like any paint chips or even microscopic injustices done to your Z. and you will tire of it's equally microscopic interior. it will suck.

mtcookson Jul 2, 2004 11:33 PM

Did the interiors shrink in the newer Z's?? My 75 almost feels better than my Maxima and there's a nice amount of room in the back for stuff due to having a hatch (probably the only cars that I like with hatches are the Z cars).

My only complaint so far by just sitting in it is, I can't stick my arm out the window. Its too high for me to stick it out comfortable. I know Leno was complaining about the same thing in the 350Z as well. Kind of strange.

bonzelite Jul 2, 2004 11:59 PM

they have, and are now evermore, raising the "beltlines" on many cars, particularly sports cars. this line, literally derived from the height of one's waist, is now rising evermore up, fattening the door profile. this gives the effect that the roof is shaved; more aggressive.

the AudiTT is bad about this, too. one cannot comfortably rest the elbow/arm on the door anymore. it is a design enhancement that is somewhat a flaw. it is looks-over-function.

Grisadiche Jul 3, 2004 05:30 AM

My brother has a 90 n/a z, and the timing belt wasn't that hard to change, so anyone who would pass up a z based on that doesnt deserve to drive one anyway. And they are really bad in the snow, me and him almost got stuck at a gas station the day after all the roads had been plowed. They are beautiful cars, and the tts are really fast. i know twinturbo.net is a great site for advice on z32's so visit there Maxheadroom if you're ever in need of advice or if you just want to show off your ride.

todamax Jul 3, 2004 08:50 AM

I picked up a nice '84 Porsche 944 a couple of weeks ago... The Max stays, as it seats 4. But the 944 is a real sports car...

internetautomar Jul 3, 2004 08:10 PM

Yawn!!
Wake me up when you guys start talking about cars with real kahonas

mtcookson Jul 3, 2004 08:18 PM

my Z will have some kahonas. 600 hp to the wheels with probably even more torque in a sub 2800 pound car that can take corners like a madman should have some balls. :D

(note: the 600 hp figure is after the turbo setup. before then it will have 310 hp and 330 ft. lb. tq normally aspirated  )

internetautomar Jul 3, 2004 08:32 PM

this is with your Q45 motor?
have you seen this swap done before?
the Q45 is one square motor and I know the SBC is a tight fit in those cars.

mtcookson Jul 4, 2004 09:58 AM

yeah, the Q motor has been done in a 240Z before and also a s13 240sx.

Speaking of kahonas, some guy in the general message board is bragging that he has 400+hp from a 4th gen max with a turbo. If true, that's wicked quick. He seemed to indicate that the motor was fairly stock.

I think there is more than one fourth gen turbo w/ over 400 hp, I know there are many 3rd or 4th gens with well over 300 hp.

mtcookson Jul 7, 2004 01:16 PM

many 4ths for sure have over 300 but not as many 3rds that i know of.

Hal was pushing around 500 some odd hp and I'm pretty sure that was on stock internals. I could be wrong though.

oops, sorry, I meant to say that there are many 4th gens over 300hp and probably some 5th gens, I've had a loooong weekend.
