What OCTANE gas do U put in your 3rd Gen
 

what kind of gas do you put in your 3rd gen max. have you noticed a difference when putting a higher octane gas?


P.S. in LA we only have 87, 89, 91...(atleast where I live). but Ive seen 85 Octane in Utah.

93 octane. VE's run optimally with premium, and here in MA 93 is only $0.05 more than 89, as opposed to the $0.10 difference between 87 and 89, so I splurge. :thumbsup:

a few places have 93 and thats what i use when i can get my hands on it. but the place i usually try to go to is 92

I can run 87 without a problem (pinging and such) but the car is less responsive.

we only have 87, 89, and 92

usually run 93, but occasionally I run 89 when the prices are really high

what is recommended by nissan???? i read somewhere that minimum 87 but recommended 91???

i run the highest octane i can, at all times, no matter what price, to keep detonation down.

93 because I have timing advances. 93 and 94 not an option on your poll?

I run 93, because I'm pretty sure my knock sensor is fubar. and now it's only 15 cents more than regular.

87 cuz i dont feel like paying extra with the little money i have to make the car better. besides, it's been running 87 all its life, why stop now?

93 or 94 octane depending if i go to mobil or sunoco.......

87 because i'm a poor guy and i've found higher octanes are making my car sluggish...

87, I think, is that unleaded? I never pay attention to the octane! I just always get unleaded. -LiL' PinKy

Voted for 92 since there's no 93.

Car's been running 93 ever since I bought it & at such a small difference in price / gallon, why change? ;) We used to have 94, but now it's gone from all pumps.

no 93 ? and you live in NYC ? im in north/central jersey and theres PLENTY of 93 and 94 (sunoco) did they ban it in the city ??

I guess some of you don't realized this but octane varies depending on geographic locations. Back in mid August when I drove all the way from Greenville, SC to LA, CA via I 40. Arkansas is the last state that served 93 Octanes. After Ark, every other gas stations in every other states starting from OK all the way to CA only serve 90 or 91 at their maximum. It really took me by surprise cuz I've max'ed out my ignition timing to 19'BTDC. Some of these low octane gas start causing my car to freaking knocks (detonation?) by the time I got to a desert in CA. It scared the crap out of me cuz I was in the middle of nowhere. Anyway, I've lowered my timing down so I could use whatever the public stations here has to offer. So far I haven't heard of any popping noises under the hood yet. After 2500miles trip in a total of 32 hours of driving, my maxima is currently at 210K and still running smooth.

FYI: Gas price at SC is only $1.7x/gal of 93, $2.0x/g of 93 at TN, $1.89/g at Ark for 93, $2.10 for 91 at Ok, $2.10/gal for 90 at northern Tx, $2.20 at NM & Arz for 91, $2.50/gal for 91 some of the dessert places, and $2.30/gal at LA for 91. I'd thought the prices would be cheaper around the mid west cuz they got sooo many oil drillers out there. Guess I was wrong after all.

Low grade, that's all you need. Anything else higher is a waste of money. That's at least for the VG, I'm not sure about the SE.

yup, it's really true that feeding the car with higher grade of octane than what Nissan specified is really a waste of moneys.

My handbook and a factory sticker inside the fuel filler flap says to use unleaded 91 only, as higher 96 octane was still leaded until about 1996. I have tried it on unleaded 96 but no difference in performance, and its 5cents per litre more than 91.

I had been using 92 octane because I had read in the FAQs section that we needed to use a minimum RON of 91. Then I RE-read the section and found that they were talking about the 4th and 5th gen maximas, not mine.
I'll be spending less at the pumps from now on, thank you very much.

I usually run midgrade which is 89 octane around here... and premium is usually 91-93 octane but it costs 10cents more... Have not had any problems with 89 but my engine is stock for the most part.

93 all its life

When I bought the car last December, I used 89 for about two months, with which I was averaging 22-23 mpg - approximately 85%/15% highway/city. I switched to 92 after that, and I started averaging 24-26 mpg with the same type of driving, so I stayed with 92.

i ran 89 in mine one time, but its just a mix of 93 and 87.

we only have 89,91,93 up here

we generally see 87,89 and 93. on occasion I'll see 100+ or even 108 :naughty:

i had up to 116 back in bloomington but it was illegal to put straight into a car and costs more than 3 dollars a gallon. around here the highest i can get locally is 91. back in bloomington i could easily get 93 and if i wanted some race gas i could go fill up a seperate container and fill my car up with it.

I put 89 in my car. It's a VG, it really doesn't need anything higher to be happy unless I gave her a timing advance.
