I just bought a 1992 Maxima today for use as a daily driver. I pick it up Thursday. I have been a Porsche guy for a long time and I have a very nice '89 944S2 that sleeps in the garage during the winter. I don't know a lot about Maxima's but I learn quick. I'll use the search before I ask too many stupid questions. ;)
The car is in pretty good condition. It's a 5 speed, dark grey with a black leather interior, and power everything. It has a few minor cosmetic issues, no stereo (the original Bose is gone), and a bad fuel injector. Other than that the car is very solid. I couldn't pass it up for $1600.

Grey rocks, espcially with black leather :woot: Nice choice ;) Welcome aboard, check the stickies above for common Maxima problems. Here is a list for 92-94 SE's

1-window regulators, your window will fall into your door and won't roll up. Its a cheap fix

2-fuel injector seems to go bad on VE's, though not has bad as VG's

3-check your knock sensor

4-If you have top-end engine noise, its your VTC sprockets, there is a write up on what to do

I'm gonna go over everything on it this weekend. We'll talk.

good find if its an se you have the DOHC if its gxe then its the SOHC.

Well, if its a 1992 with a 5-speed, it HAS to be a SE with a DOHC, eh Maxima-4DSC? :p ;)

If you can show me a pic of each engine, I can tell you which one it is.

do you have spark plug wires ? and a distributor ? or coil packs on each plug

The SOHC has red valve covers and uses igntion wires

The DOHC (which your car must have) uses coil packs and is mostly matte silver in color. No red covers I think.

If your car is a 92 with a SOHC VG and a 5-speed, someting is seriously amiss O_o

The valve covers are not red, they are tan I think.
I was just looking at the engine pics on the 90-93 cars on ebay and it doesn't look like any of them. It doesn't have that big intake to the throttle body going over the valve cover.

porsche 944? I almost bought one of those as a weekend/ summer car. I was talked (more like scared) out of it when my friends and the guys at the car and driver forums told me about the maint. costs. Is it really as bad as people say?

14 QUARTS of Mobil 1 at 4-5 bucks a quart, PLUS an 18 DOLLAR Filter :o

I know a guy with a Porsche. He told me that, plus a set of front pads is $177 bucks. Replacement headlight set? A cool $1700.

They aren't bad if you take care of them.

So what are the upsides and downsides of the DOHC V6?

Upside: More power than my VG. Weighs 100 lb. less than my VG (as does your entire car)

Downside: Clattering VTCs and using Toyota oil filters ;) Check the stickies

There's a VE 5-speed max not far from here for cheap that I plan to look into buying. Not in as nice of shape as my '91, but solid enough to be another beater ;) I've been doing my homework lol.

EDIT: Damn nice 944 there :D I dig.

The 944 only takes 6 quarts of oil (Valvoline 20W50) but a clutch runs around $650. $1200 if you have to pay to have it installed.
The biggest fear is that it has an interference motor. If the timing belt breaks, the pistons hit the valves and your checking account gets emptied.
The upside is that they corner like Jesus on rollerblades.

the one I want was going for $3000, the owner had all the records for it and it had been garaged in the winters. I've been pissed at myself for not getting since I drove behind one for a while the other day. those are nice cars.

I'll stick to my Maxima and Valvoline

Since this engine has individual coil packs on each cylinder, do they go bad often? The seller assumed that the car has a bad injector but now that I think about it it, it could be a bad coil. Compression is good on all cylinders, just one was not firing.
I guess I'll have to pull the injector and see if it's spraying. If it is I guess it would be the coil.

beautiful porsche!! I love those new wheels. Great job on the interior stuff too. I've always liked 944s and the S2 sounds like it would be a fun car.

Good deal on the maxima. Check out the sites in the FAQ post and you'll find a list of common issues and how to fix most of them. You'll probably have some ticking noise that sounds like lifters but is actually the VTCs (variable timing). It's noisy and can rob a little power, but if you dont mind the noise, it wont hurt the car. Or you can ground them (my site) to quiet them for a while.

edit: coil packs - they can be bad. Sometimes you'll see cracks along the sides of them if you pull them out. Try wrapping them in electrical tape to prevent arcing from the coil pack to the engine.

Awesome looking Porsche. Nice job of using subtle mods and styling cues to make it work well. By the look of things you might make a pretty good Maxima owner. You don't know it yet, but you have stumbled across the best possible 3rd gen -- a VE 5-speed.

Since it looks like your Porsche is about completed (winning concourse events) you now have time to mod the Maxima. It's too bad you didn't make it in here a little earlier. I sold an entire set of injectors on ebay for super cheap.

There are lots of suspension, go fast, cosmetic mods you can do to the car once you get it running well. It's also good that the bose stereo is gone. They are crap, anyway, at least in the 3rd gen.
