Tranny slipping, then fine?

1990 GXE

Almost every morning when I start my car and stick in it drive without it really warming up, first gear seems to slip for a second or two then grab and be fine the rest of the day. Today, it kept slipping for several minutes. WHen I got onto the main road witha speed limit of 35, I gave it maybe 50% throttle, RPM shot up to about 4k, but the car hardly accelerated at all. It did this for maybe 5 seconds then finally seemed to grab and be ok. Either the engine or tranny has been making a kind of whiney/whistling sound that gets higher in frequency with RPM untill I lett of the gas and it disapears. When I accelerate moderately, it goes away around 3500 rpm but then comes back when rpm's drop as it goes into the next gear.

Is my tranny dying? The guy I bought the car from with 127k said that it was replaced and had 10k miles on it.

, one day its going to slip outa gear and never go back in..maybe let the car warm up for about 5 min...
i cant even drive my car with out letting it warm, or the tranny will only work in 3rd, been like this for 2 years...once its warm.. it's feels like new, but i do flush and fill the tranny about twice a year.

have you check your fluid level yet. if its low it could cause your problem

did the guy you bought it from say the trans was rebiult with 10k or replaced with a used one with 10k because the used one could have 150k on it theres no way to tell

chances are its not going to last to much longer it could be a week it could be 2 years but once it starts slipping the damage has been done

what if its slipping cause of the fluid level? does that mean the tranny is going?

In my dads car (Grand Marquis) his tranny was basically dead 3 years ago. Slipping all the way through first. Then the next day it was fine. Still going strong 3+ years later (fingers crossed).

Check your fliud and see if it is at the proper level and what condition the fluid is in. I prob wouldnt change it if it is already bad since that would just cause more problems, but make sure to add fluid if it is low. You can also try some Lucas tranny fliud. It seems to work.

Basically dont abuse the tranny at all and consider every day it works a blessing.

You might also want to get it checked by a shop.

i agree with subs1000w. check the fluid. maybe all your gears are not getting enough if not any.

mine was exactly the same. it was fine until I changed fluid then it took like 2 days then it started slippin... it starts with little but as soon as it begins it goes fast to the end. now I can hardly use the car at all, 1 & 2 slips if I give it more than about 5% throttle, 3 doesn't grip at all, reverese is slowly starting as well. I bought a used tranny and replaced mine but that tranny was even worse. common problem.

first you should check is fluid level (apply brakes then switch through all gears, starting and finishing at P, then check) and if that's fine only one option remains:

take the tranny down, try to get a repair kit amd repair the sucker, or just leave it to a shop (where you get the job guaranteed as well!) but that's expensive. I found a hobby mechanic (a good one though) and he charged me 8k swedish (about $600) to have it rebuilt. some shops I asked wanted as much as $2000 for the same job so look around..!

good luck

I just hope it lasts untill August when I wont have anything going on for a few weeks. It would probably be cheaper for me to rent/buy the tools I would need and swap in a 5 speed. I'm confident that with some freetime a friend and I could do it without too much trouble.

I hate nissan auto tranny's, i had to have mine rebuilt, just about a month ago. it had 205k miles on though. You probly need a junker 5spd to swap out all the parts you need. most say its not worht the trouble, and to just by another running max with a 5spd.

i paid 1300 for my rebuild, try phx rebuilt trannies they do good work. never mind i have to take my max back to the tranny guys again, but they sell rebuilds on ebay with a core charge you'd probly be able to find someone better to install it, or do it yourself.

*rant* :banghead: :banghead: GDI

My tranny started slipping a bit on the way home today, then it got worse, then it would barely go 35mph up a very gentle hill.

Time to hit the junkyard I guess.

I've been reading up on what I would need to do. Does anybody here have experience doing this swap? Are there any writeups online to help me out?

hi there , I had a problem with my tranny too was not shifting on third speed when cold I've got a nissan specialist told me that if having too much fluid in the tranny the solenoids will have hard time because of the pressure .. so i did purged a little fluid and it worked.Shoul d be same if not enough fluid in there...
