I'm a recent owner of a '93 SE 5sp.
I'm approaching the 6 month mark on my Amsoil.
When I changed to synthetic, removing the filter was not pleasant. As a matter of fact it resembled an oil shower.

To try to keep as much of the $5/qt oil as possible in the car I'm considering punching a hole in the bottom of the filter with a finishing nail and draining it into an empty bottle to pour back into the motor.

Has anyone tried this or have any better ideas?

Change the filter when you do an oil change. And the oil should be changed every 3k miles. I don't care what kind of oil it is, it still should be changed every 3k miles..

it shouldn't be that bad. I can't really recommend your hole punch method because I don't know if that oil is filtered or unfiltered at that point. I would just remove the filter and then top it off. It looks like your going for about a 10k interval which is about 2.5 times longer than most of the guys here w/ dino or Mobil 1. So actually $5/quart is a pretty good value.

BTW what filter you using? Amsoil? Nissan? Other?

Another guy using Amsoil. This stuff is catching on!

I'm using an Amsoil filter. I've been running Amsoil in my cars for the last 7 years and observing the 25,000 mile change intervals. No problems ever.
