Long, slender middle muffler=resonator? Anyone removed it?

I think this is referred to as a resonator? It's behind the Cat. Conv. and before the gas tank. Does not seem to be available by itself, only in a section that runs all the way back to the rear of car. Mine's been slowly rusting out down the weld line for years. Tired of J.B. Welding it.

Has anybody simply cut it out and replaced with straight pipe? I know it's a no-no to do this to a cat. converter, but what about a resonator? Will it pass inspection (NC members, please)

i think if you take it off it would make it a lil louder. i dont think it has anything to do with emissions.

Yes that's your resonator. You can certainly cut it out and replace it with a straight pipe. It won't affect your emissions but will make the exhaust louder.

Or you could also just buy a replacement resonator and get it welded in at a muffler shop (or even get one from the shop, they should carry them)

When I bought my car mine was rusted and it was loud and obnoxious after a while, local muffler shop welded a new one in for 70 bucks

I looked for just a resonator at one time and all I found was the whole exhaust from cat to rear muffler. Anybody have a source for just a resonator? Also, did your muffler shop install resonator for $70 and you bought it elsewhere, or was that the whole price, parts and labor?

jegs, summit, etc. all have resonators of varying sizes and lengths.
I had a used resonaor installed for $50 at my local muffler shop (I considered it a good deal, because i cannot weld, and the car sounded soooooooo much better than the ripped in half resonator I had dumping exhaust out)

I just replaced the entire section from the cat down for $70 shipped. I made a thread about it and now the price jumped up.

I just did my exhaust from front/y-pipe to muffler, yes you can cut out and put a straight pipe but I wouldn't do that. I just installed all high flow piping, cat, muffler, resonator pipe at 2.5 inches and I still have a resonator style pipe there just a half inch in diameter larger. If you just want 2 replace ebay has some replacement resonator pipes 4 cheap or Rockauto.

I tried looking for the deals in all of the mentioned spots and really didn't find anything. Thought ebay would turn something up, but mostly mufflers and the whole long, resonator/bent pipe assembly for $$ shipping. What a great deal on the 'from the cat. back' find, esp. if you got the muffler too!

Oh, all I want for Christmas is JUST an inexpensive stock resonator. Any other ideas on where to procure?

I found a local exhaust shop that works by volume and has very low prices, got a rusted section cut out and welded together for $40. He wanted a couple hundred to replace the resonator with a custom built pipe with baffles, would reduce the volume without reducing the flow. $250 to replace everything cat back with the custom built piece is probably reasonable but I passed on it.

Aside from local boneyards, I would look for the locally owned exhaust shop that is willing to take on very small jobs at low prices, good chance you could be out the door under $100.

I just got mine replaced with straight pipe today on my 6th gen with stock exhaust. It really makes almost no difference, only slightly louder. You can't even tell inside the cabin.

I wondered about the cherry bomb... Is it louder than the stock? I'm really just trying to put it back stock as inexpensively as possible. Don't want it louder, less restriction, etc. $20 to put in is pretty dern good.

Almost any and every muffler shop can replace the resonator with a glass pack ("cherry bomb") for next to nothing.

it'll work great. And $40.00 sounds about right.

Cutting this section out isn't worth it, if your looking for more airflow then you can upgrade to 2 and a half inch piping. I have upgraded a half inch from front/y-pipe all the way to muffler. Obviously it will be a little louder and faster.

I replaced my Greddy resonator with a cherry bomb, as well. It was recommended by the muffler shop. Coupled with a decent MUFFLER, it helps get rid of the raspy sound. I think the resonator was the only part of the Greddy that isn't stainless. It had a rust hole in it (bought it used) and everything else is fine.

Most people just think of the muscle cars with cherry bombs and no mufflers, which are very loud and obnoxious.
