car won't start, any ideas?

hey gearheads, I just finished changing my timing belt and everything went fine. I was putting the coolant back in the car and had it running to warm up and circulate, had the AC on and everything was fine. I started the car by reaching in through the driver's window(started right up), then got in the drivers seat a couple of minutes later and revved it a couple of times just to listen. Then I shut it off. I was sitting in the seat with the door still open and went to start it again. Now it just cranks and cranks. The battery is fine and everything was cool a few minutes ago. What could this be? I read the other post on here about the alarm system, so I'm going to go check that.

Any thoughts in the meantime would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

when the car first turned on, did you hear any cliking. or taping sound?

edit: did you try to manualy turn the engine before craking it??

tried the security system approach. Put the key in the door and locked, then unlocked. The car then started, coughed a little, and then smoothed out. Has been running fine since. Thanks, this webiste is priceless for things like this.

Seek out the inhibotor relay contact points and make uself a jumper wire ready just in case. The prooblem will pay a visit...

thats great, i was thinking something much, much worse (bent valves). but I guess the simplest explanation is usualy the solution. I tend to jump to the worst case senario.

hmm usually when its the security sysetm it wont crank or anything, it just cuts the power to the ignition completely?

from my experience. but i wouldnt count a coincidence out...

I thought that would be the case. Actually it is, but in the circuit there seems to be some wobbly contacts or whatever which make things shaky, maybe security can be ?? in some halfway (fault) mode where itsdead and/or pulses the relays.

Had a veeery long thread on this issue down ten pages ago: remote starter...

All ended to ign pins 4&5. The fiver is the problematic security one driving inhibitor relay (under water reservoir).

if the factory "alarm" goes off the car just won't start.
everything else will work.
just went through this, this morn.

Schematics prove what u said, no way around it. But try to prove THAT to those guys whose experience --->with remote -speaks smtg else...

Down that circuit, wiring, connectors, electronics or whatever, is smtg fishy frozen. Pls go make a seek on remote, 1-2 months ago. They insist on that, not me. Me tend to beleive as people tell how it behaves. Starter runs perfect from key, NOT remote. Needs to bypass inhibit [clutch, security etc] with ign pin 5.

if you use a remote start, it doesn't deal with the alarm on these cars.
I had remote start on mine, it worked fine and had nothing to do with the "alarm"

Seek out that thread details please and comment on it, not my opinion. Want to highligth that there might also be smtg else...

All really depends how the connections are made, be it honda or vw. Starting circuit is one of the wolrds most real simplex tingies...
- If remote starter commands come via wacky oxidized circuits, it will cause problems even in maxima...
- If remote is soldered directly to starter solenoid wiring, only problems may be in starter - or remote key.
