opinions from those you have kyb gr2's installed
 

My struts have been leaking all over the driveway and so being 19 and still living at home, my pops couldn't stand the leaking and so he told me to find some new struts that are as cheap as possible and he'll buy them. Obviously I can't go back to stock struts with sprint spring drop and so I ordered some KYB GR2's. I just wanted to hear people's opinions who have these installed....I don't really wanna here people say, don't buy these or send em back lol..............:squint:

Mine blew w/ sprints in a couple of months

I like mine. I have them on my 90 GXE, with stock springs. Before I got them, the car was jumping like a sailboat on every bump on the freeway. Now it is tighter, and much better. I have had them for about 6 months, 8k miles.
Change the dust boots when you change the struts. You might also consider changing the strut bearings too.

id say just be careful on them, yes they are cheap for a reason.

get rdy to buy another set of struts within the year.

Unfortunately with Intrax, most struts this side of Konis will blow pretty fast. But KYBs are probably the best "cheapo" struts out there. But I do believe mike ran intrax and Tokicos or something.

i checked out their site and they run a lifetime warrenty.....or I think it said a one year warrenty or 100,000 miles. I'm not sure

With stock springs or springs that let the shocks crash on the bumb stops. Becarefull about the warranty details.

Really dude, why would I joke about somethinkg like that. Ask Shawn, he's heard me ***** about the Tokico's, they suck a$$. I replaced my rear with Gr-2's and I had tokico's.

Eibach and the ride was much better due to the tokico being blown.

You will kill anything with the sprints by the way.

According to KYB site, Lifetime warranty as long as drop is not excessive - 1.5" and lower.

I am planning on using KYB and Eibach Pro Kit springs with 1.2" drop front and rear.

Any comments from anyone with this set up?? How is the ride? I don't want that stupid looking slammed civic bounce as I drive down the road.

Ride is nice.

hey aw89maxSE, i have kyb's struts and i live in brooklyn, the ride is hard, i feel every bump, i am not a fan of tokico's or koni's, however i had to pick one so i picked tokico, since you have sprint springs the kyb's will be to hard of a ride for you, an they will blow quickly, your best bet would be tokico or koni, and depending on where you live and road conditions all three would blow quicker because of the pressure on them, i would go with tokico's or koni's, because i think kyb's warranty is void with a dropped car.

i have kyb/eibach setup, the kyb's ride is hard, you will feel the bumps.

I have KYB's and Eibachs going in tomorrow. Also a pass side drive shaft. Will chime in on this once they're in.
The harshness won't bother me at all if I am gaining superior handling. I'll get a comfy couch on wheels when I'm sixty.

I've got Eibachs and KYBs. The KYBs were just about shot after 20K miles. With 30K on them they feel as if they aren't even working anymore.

I've used Tokico Illuminas on my old MR2 SC and even with the lowered stance and racing Tokico stood behind their lifetime warranty (original owner only). IF I decide to replace the struts I'll probably go back to Illuminas again. They're more expensive, but you get your money's worth. Cheap struts are just cheap.

i have the same set up. its been about a 1/2 year and all is still good. i love the ride

based on what I've read on here, other then it not being the best idea to put them on with sprints, it also has a lot to do with how you drive and handle the bumps. I mean if you are hitting speed bumps with out slowing down or you are reduced to driving on streets that haven't been paved since the 20's, they're going to wear out. I'm very careful about any bumps and around where I live, the roads aren't TOO bad :wall:

Well my install of the GR2's with Eibach Pro kit is complete.
Now I'm coming off of original stock struts and springs that are almost 15 yrs old.
Having said that, my only complaint about my stock ride was the lack of firm "planting", especially in areas like curved on-ramps/off-ramps for example, where the car would kind of stutter and hop. Otherwise, it has been an amazingly good ride.
As for the new setup -- I feel every bump and dip now, but not the way I anticipated.
I was expecting harshness over stock, but I'm finding the car way more bouncy than before. Am I insane? These aren't harsh bounces - they are bouncier bounces. I don't know what to make of that except that I must have gotten used to shocks that needed changing. There's more float now than I expected.
As for handling, it's greatly improved. Not to mention - I like the look of the subtle drop @ 1.2" front & rear. Can't say I wouldn't have minded more like 1.5" all around.

Impressions after 1 week (with this particular setup):
- Great handling improvement over stock
- Just a touch more bounce than I had hoped for (not sure if this is attributed to the springs, shocks, or both)
- improved appearance
- good bang for the buck

More of a question than a reply.

I just obtained a 1992 Maxima GXE with weak struts. At 100k the originals are definitely shot. I was planning on installing the GR2's but I'm thinking about upgrading the springs also. I'm not sure I want to lower the car but I do want to stiffen it up. Would installing SE springs help? What is the difference in spring rates between GXE and SE?

Finally does anybody have a set of SE springs they want to unload at a "reasonable" price?

I don't think there is a difference, if their is.... It's not noticable. Read the rest of the thread for spring info.

I have all 4 SE springs. Obviously - just removed. I also have the two front struts. Give me an idea of what "reasonable" is for you and maybe we can work out something. I'm in Toronto, which is only a 4 hour drive (I've done it in 3 1/2) just thought I'd add that in case you want to take your Max for a spirited summer run - not to mention get a real Canadian beer. :king:

Before we start talking about a reasonable value could you do me a favor and measure the spring diameter? That is what is the thickness of the wire used to make the SE coil spring. I can measure my coils on the GXE and see if they are different before commiting to purchasing something that is no different from what I have. "internetautomar" stated that there is a difference but I'd like to know for sure. Thanks.

Well my Michigonian friend, I never thought I'd be measuring the diameter of the thickness of my springs. Internetautomar knows what he is talking about. He sells almost every part for our 3rd gen cars. Actually, I bought my new struts from him. The SE suspension (springs being part of that equation) dampen at a higher rate (Sports Edition).
If you REALLY want me to get my wife's sewing kit out wherein I might find a soft tape measure for me to get this specific info - I will. However - it will cost you extra. ;)

I know that in 92 they have different spring rates.

Back on subject though. I'm not worried about the circumference of the spring coil but more the diameter. I guess I could calculate the dia. from the circumference but why bother when a pair of dividers or even an open end wrench can give you the Dia. I definitely do not want your wife antagonizing you over getting into her sewing box. I'm sure "internetautomar" knows what he is talking about and if he wants to he can chime in with a price on new SE springs for a set. Let me know the Dia when you can get it and we'll talk somemore.
