Chain Tensioners & Timing Chain

Hey all just a quick question or two...
For those of you who've worked on your on ve and rebuilt the vtcs...
Have you replaced the timing chain tensioners when rebuilding the vtcs?
Have you come across a stretched chain either upper or lower?

btw,
anyone ever seen an exploded VTC? I have! the friggin' cap busted off and the gear got chewed up on my rear bank VTC. I wonder how long they have to be screwed before that happens. This engine only has 170,00km on it. Both the front and rear VTCs were screwed up. the rear was much worse off than the front though. luckily i had a spare set readily available to rebuild just for a situation like this.

I want me VG back

I replaced both upper chain tensioners when doing the VTC rebuild. I was going to replace them regardless, but I found that one was bad a couple months before I did the job. I don't think chain stretch is anything to worry about, it would take a heck of a lot of work to get them out and measure.

i doubt i'll change the tensioners because i've already invested soooo much into this ve.
i took the lower timing cover off to see what kind of damage the shattered vtc shrapnel had done. nothing too bad fortunately. just a damaged timing chain guide. i've got some extras so i'm doing fine i guess. all this work better be worth it....

I hope a few thousand miles down the line a tensioner doesn't go. It all adds up too fast, all three tensioners is around $150. I was only able to replace the uppers, since getting at the lower is a ton of work.

Didn't change the tensioners on mine or awsm66/pervis anathema's car.

We did see the cap broken on the VE we took out of that car. I posted pics before - http://community.webshots.com/album/231657613DCWtWQ

well, now we know why the rebuild kit comes with a new vtc cover. I thought it was just due to pressing it on, maybe the cover deforms a little after its used.

didn't make any noise because it wouldn't turn over The VTC shrapnel broke the timing chain cover and leaked out all the oil. Not sure what else happened to the engine since we didn't have time to dig further into it. My VTCs were ticking for a while (and then grounded for a while) before I fixed them and the covers were fine. I think its very rare to see the covers broken.
