2nd gen AT work with a 3rd gen VG?

A guy on my route bought a 2nd gen for a few hundred bucks, but he also has a very nice 3rd gen AT with a bad tranny.

He wanted to know if the 3rd gen auto tranny will work in a second gen. If not, what are the differences?

I tried the search, but it isn't working for some reason.

I remember being told that a 5 speed 2nd gen will work on a 3rd gen; you might have to switch the spindles and possibly the carrier bracket, but the gearing might be different on the automatic (it is different on the 5 speed, but that is not controlled by the ecu). I know that you are asking about a 3rd gen tranny on a 2nd gen, but it's the same principle.

wait. 3rd gen has a bad tranny, but he wants to put it in the 2nd gen??

Sarin has a 3rd gen 5spd in his 2nd gen

not sure aside from that

Oops, I meant 2nd gen tranny in a 3rd gen VG. Both are ATs.

The 3rd gen is nice, but bad tranny.

The 2nd gen is a POS, but runs and drives good (good tranny)

yeah, I got that part.

I was just saying 3rd gen to second has been done, so that increases the chances for the other way around working. I'd PM Sarin and ask, he could get the model number out of his manual :gotme:

2nd Gen Auto tranny has an extra cable running diagonally across the top. I was told it was for a manually operated (from the throttle?) kickdown, whereas the 3rd Gen VG tranny has an electronic kickdown.

IMHO I'd just find a decent 3rd gen tranny and put it in. I have a 3rd gen VG tranny for sale, but I'm on the wrong coast!

It ain't me, boss.

I don't think I would buy an AT Maxima, period. This guy already has both cars. I think he paid $500 for the 3rd gen and $300 for the 2nd gen. He has been scoping all the junkyards within 200 miles of here and hasn't come up with an AT yet. Well, that's what he told me, anyway. I was just trying to pass along some info.

Thanks for the help, though. I will tell him about the cable/kickdown thing.
